I was super happy to share with you all my childhood dream come true when I meet the two actors (pictured above) who starred in The Outsiders. Today, I want to share with you a poem that was recited in both the book by S.E. Hinton and in the film version.

Before I share it, let me give you a little background on Robert Frost. The author/poet of "Nothing Gold Can Stay".

Robert Frost Circa 1910

Frost was an American born poet (1874-1963) whose life although marred by constant loss and grief wrote many poems that were dedicated to the wonder and awe that living can bring. He lost both his parents by the time he was twenty-six, had committed his sister to a mental institution due to depression, and had four out of his six children pass on before him. He also became widowed in 1937 after his beloved wife Elinor passed away from complications from Breast Cancer and Heart Disease.

Even with all that heartbreak Frost when on to become one of the most famous poets of the 20th Century. He was able to depict the fragility, hopeful and hopelessness of humanity in a way that even the average non-literary person could relate to.

Although one of the beauties about poetry is that it can be interpreted in multiple different ways, I find Frost's poetry to a lot more direct than people assume it to be. But again, that's my interpretation.

There is a poignant scene in the film, The Outsiders when Johnny (Ralph Macchio) is seeing a sunset for the very first time. That is when his best friend Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell) shares with him the poem, "Nothing Gold Can Stay". Later on in the film, Ponyboy reads a letter from Johnny (after he passed on) that explains what he thinks the poem means. He tells Pony that he believes that Frost meant that childhood is fleeting and that we don't stay gold forever (young) so keep hold of those feelings and that excitement that childhood brings.

"Nothing Gold Can Stay" was written in in 1923 by Frost. Like I said, it can be interpreted in different ways. I, myself believe in what Johnny said. To stay gold. Keep yourself refreshed and your thoughts moving and be excited about life. What is your interpretation of this poem?

Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

A Childhood Dream Come True

The Outsiders is one of my favorite books. It is in my top five and even though it is for young adult readers, I find the message it speaks transcends age and time.

It was published in 1967 and set  by a then teen aged girl named S.E. Hinton. S. E. began writing the book when she was fifteen and wrote most of it when she was sixteen. It wasn't until she was eighteen that the book was published. I remember learning that the author of The Outsiders was a teen when she wrote and had her book published and teenage me thought, well if she can do it then I can too. I still think I can. I have so many unfinished transcripts..one day. one day...

The book follows the lives of Pony Curtis and his two brothers as well as the members of the greasers gang he is in. Set in 1965, you get to have a glimpse on the lives of those who live on the wrong side of the tracks as well as the right side. And you learn that as one character says, "It's hard all over".

When I learned that Chiller Theatre Expo was going to have two of the stars of the film version of The Outsiders (1983),  Ralph Macchio (Johnny) and C. Thomas Howell (Ponyboy)at their event, I knew I had to go. I have been to conventions before and although I am  not a fan girl type, I am a passionate person when it comes to film/tv/books. See..that's just the nerd in me.

Last year I attended with my husband, brother, and sister in law and we has a blast. You can take a peak at who I met here.

Of course I had to dress up again  for this event. I purchased this dress from The Greedy Seagull over the summer and have been waiting patiently to wear it in the fall. Does this dress scream Fall or what?

This dress is one of my favorites and now I want a slew of them with zippers in the front and large pockets on each side! My cardigan was purchased at Target for $17.99, my jewelry purchased via Etsy (the cat sweater clip is my new pride and joy), my flower clips from Claire's Accessories, and lastly my 1950's grey handbag was from Easy.

My copy of The Outsiders was given to me my freshman year of HS by a senior. This copy is not a first edition as they are hard to come by but it is a 1987 hardcover 20th Anniversary edition, with the photos of the cast from the film on the cover.

Most people don't want their books autographed and I am not big on autographs (I sorta think everyone is famous in their own way) but I felt that meeting them and having them put their names in my book would just make my book more special to me and it did! Oh it did! Like I said earlier I am not a fan girl but I was shaking when I met both of them. They are a part of my childhood. I remember watching the film and hanging my poster of the group of guys from the film on my bedroom wall and I remember feeling connected to the character of Ponyboy Curtis.

Meeting them was a special, special moment.

Others were asking them to sign dvds and posters but I was the only one asking them to sign a book. They both loved my copy to bits and neither had seen that specific copy before. It was so neat to be able to tell them how special it was to meet them. It....was....awesome!

Honorable mentions to two fantastic and utterly inspirational people I met that day as well goes to Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes) and Larry Storch (1960s show called F Troop) were both such gentlemen. I adored them both. They loved being there and got to chat with Milo a bit and Larry was just so sweet. He is ninety now and still has his whits about him. It was so nice to meet someone from years gone by, as you can imagine.

Being More Authentic

Being Authentic. To be more real, more honest, and in the end-more myself. And that has resulted in this "new" blog, A Vintage Nerd.

A few weeks ago my blog Bunny's Victory suddenly didn't work. I was crushed when that happened. I told myself I can do two things: stop blogging or try my hand at something I have been deeply thinking to do for a few months now. Best not to look at the downside of things and look at how you can make something positive out of a negative....right?

That resulted in my quest for being more authentic with myself and with others. I didn't expect to revamp my image as a blogger or start over in some ways in the blogging community but I find that being able to combine my two loves-family and blogging-has made me happier. I also have found that going by my natural name and not my stage name as made me feel more honest and it feels great!

I loved being Bunny, it is my nickname at home and I also call my daughter by that nickname. But I used my stage name because at the time I was delving more into pinup than I was into vintage.

I have been blogging since the summer of 2011 and it has been a complete joy for me. I didn't want to stop just because I hit a snag. I have always had a passion for writing and for creative expression. And I cannot tell you how happy I was to be able to find such an outstanding community of bloggers, especially in the vintage world.

In the end I created a blog that is closer to my way of thinking and expression than I did in the past. Bunny's Victory will always be a part of me and a link was found to that blog (not the .com) that actually worked (how ironic) so feel free to look back at past posts.

I do not consider this a new blog but rather an extension of the last one.

A Vintage Nerd will follow my journey into living a more authentic and vintagey life through my love of learning. So I will share fantastic book reviews and magazines as well as cinema spotlights. I will continue to incorporate fashion into my blog but it will always be linked to something I learned or was inspired by.

The types of reading material you will see I took a sample of in the photos below. Vintage magazines, cinemas magazines, modern magazines with vintage articles within them, autobiographies, biographies, beauty/hair/fashion books, as well as vintage pamphlets/booklets.

I am really excited about all of these changes! I love to hear from my readers so feel free to follow me on my Instagram, Snapchat (avintagenerd), or Pinterest. Also feel free to email me anytime and don't be shy about recommending a book/film that you think would be wonderful to read/see. I love hearing what people think and welcome any suggestions!

Welcome to A Vintage Nerd
