Movie Madness Monday: Fun 1980's Flicks

I know some may not consider the 80's vintage and in my book its definitely does not belong in the classic film category but I wanted to bring some fun into my movie madness mondays posts for today. The 80's produced some fantastic and unique films but as funny as many of them are they always sneaked in some intense and serious moments. When I was thinking about what 80's flicks were just pure fun and no heavy stuff, I thought of these four films.

Midnight Madness is insanely fun. There is one moment between two brothers that you begin to hear the "lesson of the day" theme music playing in the background but truly 98% of this film is pure hilarity. You have the debut of Micheal J. Fox and a band of wackos running around trying to find clues in order to win this big challenge. Let's just say because of this film I still want to have to Great All-Nighter themed birthday party. Anyone want to come?

Girls Just Want to Have Fun has a very young SJP, Helen Hunt, and Shannon Doherty in it. If you are a fan of Sex in the City, you really should get acquainted with SJP's earlier work. She's amazing. This movie is just fun from beginning to end. Its sort of like Dance Fever (an 80s show about dancing) and Footloose all rolled into one but just very, very girly.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. There, I said it. Ugh-oh! Gothic princess shaking her senora with a house full of friendly ghosts. Enough said.

Lastly, Teen Witch. I mean who wasn't Louise? Who is still Louise? Smart, sweet girl who longs to have people around her take notice of how awesome she really is. It is your finest hour if you watch this film. Teen dream perfection and oodles of fun.

I love a good emotional or educational moment in a film but sometimes its just nice to sit back and not get too deep. Sometimes its just nice to have fun watching something silly and cute and these 80's selections deliver.

Have you seen any of these films? What are your favorite fun 1980's flicks?

  1. Eighties films are a firm favourite of mine! Aside from the sense of instant nostalgia that they stir, I think that there was a lot of good acting, important life lessons, and some seriously cool fashion to be hand in many of them as well. It's honestly hard for me to even shortlist some of my faves, but a small selection of flicks that I can watch a million times and never tire of include Ferris Bueller's Day off, Breakfast Club, The Secret of My Success, 9 to 5, The Karate Kid, all of the Naked Guns and Police Academies, and Ghostbusters. Hmm, I feel a movie marathon weekend coming on... :)

I adore Girls Just Want to have Fun! The cool thing about this movie is that it is set in my home town Chicago. Every time I watched it I use to always check to see if I can try and spot some of the out door sceens in the movie so I can go and visit them. Sadly no, as I later learned this movie was not shot in Chicago which is sad. The only Chicago things that were used in the move were a Chicago public transit bus and a shot of the Sears tower. Plus a reference to the Air and Water show which only appears around here in the summer months when the schools are out for summer break. Thankfully some one took the time to really find the real filming locations for Girls Just Want to Have Fun link http://www.itsfilmedthere.com/2012/05/girls-just-want-to-have-fun.html shame to learn it was all shot in Los Angeles.
I also adore Teen Witch. What I really like about this film is the moral that Louise learns in the end and I really like her commonsense confident non-conformist best friend. Yes we all want to be popular but being popular does have its price. Which can be exciting and fun in the beginning. And Louise does end up missing her old way of life plus getting revenge on those people who bullied Louise is sweet but at what cost. Still a fun movie to watch for older teenagers and adults.
