To Sir, With My Love, Always

On January 6, 2022 the world lost one of its most profound actors of Old Hollywood. Sidney Poitier changed the way black men were seen on the big screen and gave light to the important issues of his generation, those issues which are still important and relevant today.

Sidney used his skills as an actor to tell the type of stories that needed to be explored and shared. He was not only a prolific actor but a skilled writer (published three books), a incredible director (directed nine films), and a passionate activist. His most cherished role was that of a husband, father to six daughters, grandfather to eight grandchildren, and great-grandfather to three great-grandchildren. And when he passed he was surrounded by those he loved and loved him in return.

Sidney came from very humble beginnings to end up inspiring generations to carry themselves with dignity and grace. I personally have always found his performances to be enthralling. In To Sir, with Love (1967) he is the kind of teacher every student deserves to have. In A Patch of Blue (1965) he is compassionate and patient with someone in need of kindness. In A Warm December (1973) he is daring to love again even after everything he has already lost.

Sidney Poitier is one of those people whose films and stories stay with you. And to that I say, To Sir, With My Love, Always.

Here are five of my favorite Sidney Poitier Films:
