Movie Madness Monday: Fantasy and Magic

This week in lieu of my celebratory posts on The Wizard of Oz I wanted to share with you some classic fantasy films. You may or may not have heard of them but they blew the fantasy genre out of the water for their time. The first two are silent films but I quite enjoy a silent film or two.

There was a 1940 British remake of the 1924 film The Thief of Bagdad (starring Douglas Fairbanks) which starred Sabu. As well as a 1952 and 1961 film remake. Have you seen them all? I think the ones that stick in my mind the most at the first two (1924 and 1940 remake).

Here are my choices for this Monday:

Destiny 1921

The Thief of Bagdad 1924

Beauty and the Beast 1946

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad 1958

Fantasy films have an air of magic about them. They bring to us the impossible (ie flying carpets) and they gift us with an experience of thinking outside of the box.

Have you seen any of these fantasy and magic films? Did any of them blow you away with their (at the time) state of the art special effects?

  1. I can't say as though I recall seeing any of these fun vintage fantasy films, but if I could take my pick right now, it would be Beauty and the Beast. The early 90s Disney version was one of my favourite films when I was a little girl and I've always liked the story in general, so chances are this 40s take would be a hit with me.
