Vintage Hair: Jayne Mansfield Hollywood Hed-Topper

May 26, 2023

I love discovering new-to-me vintage pieces. I found this head covering while researching something else and I had to share it. Jayne Mansfield had a line of these headscarves created in the 1950's that were very versatile. According to the manual that comes with the headscarf it can be changed and worn in eight different ways.

After finding this hair accessory I am now on a mission to find myself one because I can't resist a good vintage hair accessory. I think my favorites styles of it being used are the Butterly, the Buccaneer, and the Rosette. Which styles do you like? Have you ever heard of  Jayne Mansfield Hollywood Hed-Topper?

If you're like me you might struggle to find some easy hairstyles to do in the summer. Humidity can really make your hair go wacky especially if your hair is curly or wavy like mine. Figuring out ways to manage your hair in the summer heat and still make it look cute might get tricky but its not impossible.

Some easy ways you can add a vintage look to your summer hairstyles can be by adding a vintage headband or scarf to pull your hair away from your face or to use as decoration with a bun.

Here are a few vintage summer hairstyles that might help inspire you:

A Vintage Nerd, Winter Products, Skin Quenchers, Blogger Beauty Products, Elemis Face Mask, Tula Eye Moisturizer, Soap and Glory

I am big fan of taking care of your skin. Whether it's moisturizing it in the winter or covering it in sunscreen in the summer. When cold weather comes so does the dry skin. There is nothing worse for your skin that to allow it to dry out. Although these are fairly modern beauty products, these are some of my favorites that I like to use during the winter months.
  1. First Aid Repair: Ultra Repair Cream: Est. 2009: Products made in the U.S.A.
  2. Elemis: Papaya Enzyme Peel Mask: Est. 1988: Products made in the United Kingdom.
  3. Soap & Glory: Hand Food Hydrating Hand Cream: Est. 2007: Products made in the United Kingdom.
  4. Too Faced: Hangover Lip Balm: Est. 1998: Products made in the U.S.A.

  6. Republic of Tea: Get Relaxed Tea: Est. 1992: Products made in the the U.S.A.
Whether you are twenty or fifty I really believe that taking care of your skin, your hair, and your overall health is the most important thing we can do for ourselves. I enjoy these products because they quench my sensitive skin and they feel great. What products do you like to use during the winter months?

Celebrating Avon's 134th Birthday

Did you ever shop from Avon? I was actually a seller when I was thirteen. I had so much fun selling for them because I used their products all the time. I have good memories of using their products especially a Tinkerbell chapstick I coveted that my mother bought me when I was seven (circa ‘83).⠀

This year Avon is celebrating their 134th Anniversary. Avon began in 1886 and is the fourteenth largest beauty company in the world. ⠀
Avon always has an array of beauty products up for sale but in celebration for their birthday they have been releasing Iconic products. One of these sets is a Iconic Mini Lip Color Set. It came well packed and everything about it is adorable and lush. I’m a lipstick kinda girl so this was right up my alley. Three beautiful shades that I can wear any day of the week.
Aren’t these lipsticks so pretty? If you shopped from Avon, what products did you buy?

You all know I love to read and you know I love vintage especially the 1960's but did you know I struggle with doing hairdos? When I first started to delve full time into vintage back in 2011 I struggled with doing 1940's victory rolls, now I struggle with 1960's hairstyles. My struggles come from the weakness from my hands that is derived from my disability but sources of inspiration and instruction like in this 1967 Dell Purse Book have really helped me.

What is working for me is after I have found the right vintage hair inspiration and vintage hair tutorials  is to find the right tools and techniques that work well with my type of hair and with my specific challenges. And at the end of the day its all about practice, practice, practice, isn't?

Here are some pages of inspiration and tutorials for those with long hair from Dell Purse Book's 1967 issues called Styles & Sets for Long Hair. I hope you find this book helpful.

The Beauty of Natalie Fragrance

August 23, 2018
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Natalie Wood Fragrance, Natalie Wood Perfume, JCrew Pajamas

A year ago I made a happy discovery when I found out that the late, great Natalie Wood's daughter, Natasha Gregson Wagner created a fragrance in honor of her mother called Natalie. I don't typically like to wear perfume anymore but when I heard that the fragrance of Natalie had a light scented gardenia smell to it, it really peaked my interest. I immediately put it on my must-have list and luckily Santa placed a small roller ball of Natalie in my stocking this past year.

I don't typically like to wear perfume anymore but when I heard that the fragrance of Natalie had a light scented gardenia smell to it, it really peaked my interest. Once I rolled on Natalie for the first time, I instantly fell in love because it was exactly has promised. Floral, airy, and delicate. I particularly love the roll on style bottle because it can be easily tossed into a bag or purse and I can refresh my scent as many times as I like throughout the day.

This past May I entered into a contest on Natasha's Natalie Wood Instagram and she was only going to give away three prizes and to my shock I won! Shortly after I received the cutest package that included a postcard of Natalie, a Natalie Eau de Pardum Roller Ball , and the new La Rose Eau de Perfume Roller Ball. What a neat thing to happen and I can tell you that La Rose did not disappoint. It smells beautiful.

If you are interested in trying the Natalie or La Rose perfumes you can get them at Natalie Fragrance.

How To Care For Your Skin At Any Age

March 02, 2015
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Beauty Products for Aging, How To Care For Your Skin At any Age, Beauty Recommendations

I hear people say that the best time to start taking care of your skin is when you enter your 30's. I actually believe that you should always tend your skin no matter your age. It's the largest organ we have and its the first thing people see.

In my latest video on my YouTube Channel I share you my tips on how to care for your skin. The tips stem mainly from personal experience and observation. Keep in mind everyone has different types of skin and genetics effect the way we age but if you care for your skin you give it a chance to be the best it can be.

I also share the products I use at the moment. I think you should always be open to trying out new products and its perfectly fine to have your skin regime shift and change.

How To Set Your Hair in Rollers

November 15, 2014

Want to know how to set you hair with rollers? Look no further. I typically use a type of rag roller but for my 1960's hairstyles I usually use my hard rollers. The rollers I have thankfully have some cushion to them but I am still working on easier ways to achieve 1960's hairstyles without sleeping with hard hair rollers. Any suggestions?

If you would like to learn how to set your hair in hard rollers, here are some diagrams to help you:

With my new up and coming blog design I will be having categories for the topics I write about. One of the new ones will simply be called 1960's. I adore all the eras of the 20th Century but I find the 60's to be the most fun, daring, and experimental.

I scored a few Dell Purse Books from 1960's focusing on hair a few months back and they have so informative and helpful that I want to share more of what I found.  A while ago I posted my findings from my  Dell Purse Book from 1963.

In this Dell Purse Book it shares various hairstyles from 1964 and what look is best with your specific face shape. I love when hairstyle books show you what looks best with the shape of face you have. I think the hard part is figuring out what sort of shape you have.

Here some nifty 1964 looks:

Old Hollywood Beauty and Fitness Secrets

August 02, 2014
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Old Hollywood Beauty and Fitness Secrets, Old Hollywood Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog

I find beauty regimens fascinating. What people use, what works for them or doesn't, and what their rituals are is interesting. I also find most interesting are the beauty and fitness regimens of Old Hollywood starlets. They were glamorous, they were beautiful, and they used what worked for them and made it shine (of course with the help of others in many instances).

I think it's important to keep in mind many, many of these starlets were created to look the way they did but the studios, by makeup/hair stylists, and fashion designers. For example,  Audrey Hepburn would have each of her lashes separated by a safety pin to create that full lash look. Audrey actually had her professional makeup artist named Alberto de Rossi who did that for her.

But at the end of the day how they maintained their looks, kept fit, and looking their very best was up to them.

Joan Crawford was known to wash her face every morning with a sink filled with ice water and would splash it on her face multiple times. Marilyn Monroe is known to have used Erno Laszlo products religiously. Many starlets were also known to use petroleum jelly under their eyes and on their face overnight.

Whatever they used, boy, it worked for them. The likes of Rita Hayworth, Elizabeth Taylor, and Grace Kelly were known for their great work as actresses but their were also known for their great beauty.

I do believe strongly in taking care of oneself as best as possible no matter your age or lifestyle. Getting lots of rest, lots of sleep, drinking water daily, not smoking or drinking, and spending minimal time in the sun are all things we can do as our daily beauty ritual.

But if you want to learn more about Old Hollywood Beauty and Fitness Secrets, look no further. I found three fantastic books that may inspire and teach you a few things about Old Hollywood and their beauty secrets

Here are some great articles on Old Hollywood Beauty and Fitness Secrets:

Have you ever wondered what your favorite starlets did to maintain their beauty? Which actress are you most intrigued by?

New York is starting to have some unbelievable humid days. Because of the up and coming heat and humidity I have been looking into vintage hairstyles that would keep me cool. I haven't done an updo in ages but I certainly plan to do many this summer. If you can imagine thick wavy hair in the middle of a humid day, well it's just not cute.

Here are a few tutorials that may help you achieve some vintage hairstyles that will keep you cool this summer:

OPI & Coca Cola = Bubbly Nail Colors

June 10, 2014
A Vintage Nerd, Opi Coca Cola

OPI has done it again. I purchased about a month ago a few shades from the Brazilian Line which has the most luscious spring colors I have ever seen. After trying out OPI and this particular line I knew to keep my eye out for more fabulous shades and collections. And boy do they have one!

The Coca-Cola Collection just came out this month and they look incredible. What a wonderful and creative way to celebrate a company that was established in 1944 but its beginnings start out as far as 1885! And an American company to boot. I find the colors to be dazzling and I cannot wait to try them myself. Nothing like having a little vintage on your nails that is a splash of Coca-Cola.

If you are interested in purchasing some colors (or all the colors) from this collection you can find them here on Amazon and also here in Ulta as well as other beauty supply store. Individually they cost $9.00 but you can also get the mini kit of all the colors for less than twenty dollars on Amazon.

Do you like to have a manicure once in a while? Do you like these shades of nail polish?
