Be Inspired: Sunshine Award Questionnaire

April 10, 2024
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Old Hollywood Blog, Classic Movie Reviews, Old Movie Blog, Realweegiemidget’s Reviews, Sunshine Blogger Award
The nicest thing happened a few months ago. Gill from Realweegiemidget’s Reviews blog nominated me for a Sunshine Blogger Award. It's been ages since I have been gifted one of these. They were really popular when I first started blogging back in 2011. It was really cool to be nominated and thought of by such a wonderful blogger like Gill from Realweegiemidget’s Reviews.

Now technically I will not be receiving the award because I cannot nominate 11 bloggers. Frankly the world of blogging especially for us vintage bloggers has changed dramatically over the years. Many have left and stopped blogging. Honestly I just don't know 11 consistent bloggers well enough to nominate them. So although I won't fully receive this award, I still wanted to answer the questions that Gill asked because they were just too much fun to pass up.

I also wanted a chance to share a little more about me. Hope you enjoy reading and check out Realweegiemidget’s Reviews blog when you can.

Who would be your dream interview subject and why?

My dream interview would have been a gaggle of Old Hollywood stars including Joan Crawford, Jimmy Stewart, Sidney Poitier, Debbie Reynolds, Bette Davis, and Ricardo Montalbán,

What’s your favorite blogathon that you have either run or taken part in?

All the ones I have participated in the past year.

You have the choice of a film festival to attend in 2024 in an all-expenses paid trip, which do you choose…?

I only know of one. The TCM Classic Film Festival. It began in April 2010 but by then I was pregnant with my third child and my two eldest where toddlers themselves. I knew I wouldn't be able to go and I remember feeling crushed. I really wanted to meet Robert Osborne as I admire him greatly. So going to this festival would be a long awaited dream come true for me.

What film-inspired present would you buy for me if you had 50 dollars (or your own currency) to spend…?

I would get you a few dvds and books to enjoy because they are the gifts that keep on giving.

Imagine that you are moving house, which actor or actress would you choose as your next door neighbor?

I think I would want neighbors who would be friendly and fun. I think it would be Debbie Reynolds and Robert Osborne. Debbie would never be boring and Robert (who did technically acted a little in the 1960's) would be great to do a book club with or watch movies with all the time.

What’s your favorite film franchise?

Of modern films I will say the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises.

Which year is your favorite in film, and support your answer with your top 3 movies from this time…

I cannot choose a year in classic films because it's just too much too sift through. I can give one favorite year of films from the 1980's because its the main decade of my childhood. These films are super nostalgic for me. The year is 1985 and some of the top favorites of that year were; The Last Dragon, The Goonies, Back to the Future, Explorers, Fright Night, Silver Bullet, Young Sherlock Holmes, Legend, Ladyhawke, and Enemy Mine. It was a great year for movies.

Recommend a film to me that you think would easily fit in my blog.

La Prima Notte Di Quiete (1972) starring the great Alain Delon. I would also highly recommend I Knew Her Well (1965). It's beautiful and deeply haunting.

Without saying who the murderer is, which Agatha Christie inspired movie would you change the murderer in…

I would have to choose The Mirror Crack'd (1980)

What's your favorite films related biopic?

I cannot share one so I will share a slew that I have enjoyed through the years. Some of these are; Brian's Song (1971), The Elephant Man (1980), Amadeus (1984), Empire of the Sun (1987), Chaplin (1992), Girl, Interrupted (1999), Boys Don't Cry (1999), Almost Famous (2000), Remember the Titans (2000), Frida (2002), The Pianist (2002), Hotel Rwanda (2004), Philomena (2013) Hacksaw Ridge (2016), Hidden Figures (2016), Elvis (2022).

Who was the first celebrity who responded to you on social media and who was the last…?

None. The celebs I appreciate are all much older and don't know how to use use social media very well. Oh, Ethan Peck (Gregory Peck's grandson) did like a comment I left for him on his IG page-does that count?

A Vintage Nerd Amazon Storefront

February 12, 2024
A Vintage Nerd, A Vintage Nerd Amazon Storefront, Amazon Storefront, Vintage Blog, Classic Movie Blog, Old Hollywood Blog

I'm taking a few steps as a blogger to not only enhance my blog and the work I have been doing for over ten years but also to build on the business side of my blog. I recently opened an Amazon Storefront on Amazon. There I have categories where you can shop from. Each category is carefully curated, true to my brand, and caters to all things that I love.

The classic films and old Hollywood books I added to my storefront are a result of years of watching, reading, discovering, and endless trips down the rabbit hole of researching. In those two categories alone in my shop you can find endless titles of films and books-many which are hard to find or you may have never heard of before.

I am adding to my shop frequently but know that what I add I have either worn, seen, read, or used before myself. I will never recommend a product that isn't good quality. Each time someone from my storefont shops, I will receive a small commission once the item is shipped.

I would love for you to stop by my new Amazon Storefront. I love what I do as a blogger here on A Vintage Nerd and hope that this new endeavor will make the grade.

10 Years of A Vintage Nerd Blog

October 28, 2023
A Vintage Nerd, Retro Lifestyle Blog, 10 Years of A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Retro Inspired Fashion, Old Hollywood Blog, Classic Movie Reviews, All Things Nerdy

I remember clearly the night I created A Vintage Nerd blog. My first blog Bunny's Victory was having major problems and I could no longer log into my account. I remember crying and panicking and realizing that things couldn't end that way. I had to ask myself whether or not I was going to stop blogging or continue ahead. It didn't take me long to realize that I really loved what I was doing and I didn't want to stop. Then suddenly the name A Vintage Nerd popped into my head and I started it that very night.

10 years have now passed since I started and I have really loved every minute of it. Whether a few people see my posts or a lot of people see my posts-it doesn't matter. I am deeply passionate about writing, sharing, learning, teaching, and exploring. And my blog has allowed me to do the things I love to do and connect with others. They say when you are doing something you love that it never feels like work. It is still work-long hours researching, writing, editing, taking photos, reading books and watching films to review, etc but I have relished in every aspect of blogging.

I wanted to have a big celebration to mark my 10 years as a vintage nerd on my blog but I decided to just enjoy the moment quietly. I am grateful to all those who stop by and read my posts. And I am grateful that I get to work on something that I truly love doing. Happy 10 years to A Vintage Nerd blog!

Here are some of my favorite posts from the past 10 years:

7 Reasons Why You Should Still Go To Movie Theaters

October 24, 2023
A Vintage Nerd, Going to the movies, Classic Movie Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Jean Overalls and Beret

One of the things I enjoy doing the most is taking my family to see a movie in the movie theater. The experience of getting out of the house, the excitement of what we are about to see, and the treat of seeing a movie on a big screen are what I love the most.

We mainly support our local movie theater which is privately owned and also a historic landmark but we also indulge in other types of movie theater experiences such as; IMAX, Fathom Events, theaters that serve meals, and small theaters in the city.

Here are 7 reasons why you should still go to movie theaters:

  1. Get out of the comfort of your home and watch a movie in the comfort of your favorite movie theater.
  2. See a film on the big screen the way it was meant to be seen.
  3. Hang out with your loved ones to watch something fun.
  4. Watching a film on the big screen will feel like an immersive experience.
  5. Seeing a movie in the theater allows you to view it from a different perspective.
  6. Your kids won't be able to talk, get on electronics, or leave-they will learn to be still, pay attention, and enjoy what they are watching.
  7. Opportunities to watch films from years ago instead of just on your t.v. at home will be a magical and unique experience.

Be Inspired: Cannot Stop The Change

April 24, 2023
A Vintage Nerd, Inspirational Post, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Vintage Blog, Retro Plus Size Fashion, Retro Personal Style, Free People Beret

They say spring is the season of change. The grass gets greener, the weather gets warmer, the flowers bloom, and we shed our coats for lighter outerwear like cardigans and jackets. This spring I've been reflecting even more than ever. I'm a reflective person by nature. Journaling used to be my outlet for many years until I moved into the blogging format. Although my blog is not a lifestyle one I do like to share bits and pieces of inspiration when I can.

One of the things about life that you can count on is that it will always change. Nothing ever stays the same. Reflecting has been a way for me to work through the changes and figure them out as they are happening. But sometimes so much change can come at you all at once that it is near to impossible to figure any of it out. Understanding it all becomes like trying to solve a large puzzle.  I think the last two times I faces so many changes in my life was probably my teen/young adult years which I think everyone goes through and when I became a mother of three which happened in the span of four years during my early thirties.

Now that I am in my late 40's and just a few steps away from entering my 50's I have been wondering a lot about things I haven't wondered about in a long time. Like who am I after all this life has been lived, can I still dream big and make them come true, how do I fit into this world, and what kind of woman will I be as my children get older. Not only do I have philosophical questions swimming around in my noggin but I have a body that is undergoing changes both because of my disability and just being a woman.

And as all this hits me all the time, all at once-every single day the only thing I know for sure is that I cannot stop the change. I'm being pushed forward into the next day even though I am still trying to figure out all the other days that already passed by. I have no choice but to sit still with myself as much as I can and let time ease the pain, stress, worry, and exhaustion that has come from all this change.

I'm being reminded again at this phase of my life that I cannot stop any of this from happening so I should just try to be patient and see where it will lead me. This isn't my usual approach to life. My usual approach to is to ask questions, reflect, and discern my answers for myself. But sometimes when life is hitting you with all sorts of things the best thing you can do for yourself is to be still, be patient, and be open to the world around you because I do believe all the answers we are searching for are already inside of us. We just need to remind ourselves sometimes to be patient.

Be Inspired: So This Is 47

January 24, 2023
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Red Beret, Vintage Nerd, Style Over 40, Vintage Inspired Fashion

So this is 47. This new year brings me a lot of the same things and hope for some things to evolve. I'm still a mom, still struggling with my disability, and still blogging. The things that I hope to evolve will or won't with time. They say another year older is another year wiser. My hopes for myself is that I become wise enough to ignore any doubts I may have within myself and believe more in my abilities.

There are so many blessings that come with age. One of them is the gift of time. With time you can work on your goals, change what you need to change, and learn better skills to help you become more of the person you want to be. So here's to 47.

The new year is upon us all and going forward I would to share something that is important to me. Being nice isn't a sign of weakness. It doesn't take a lot of effort to be nice. A simple smile, a "good morning", or some words of encouragement are all it takes to make another persons day a little bit brighter.

We are living in challenging times and spreading a little joy out there in the world does make a difference. And as you share that joy with others don't forget the importance of being nice to yourself. Being nice is the new cool.

Be Inspired: Celebrating Our 20th Dateaversary

December 07, 2022
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Retro Diner, Retro Lifestyle Fashion, Be Inspired, JCrew Factory Overall Jeans, Red Beret

Today my husband and I celebrated the 20th anniversary of our very first day, which I like to call a Dateaversary. Special days are often remembered or celebrated because they are days when something memorable happened. Our first date on December 7, 2002 was the best date I ever had.

The best advice I could give to anyone wanting to have a long term love relationship is to make sure to carve out time together even if its just an hour a day. It is so important to keep communication and connection flowing. We all get busy with work, bills, and children but doing simple things like holding hands, having lunch together, talking about your day, or doing something you both like to do together is vital to keeping a relationship healthy and flourishing.

I feel lucky and blessed everyday that I get to spend my life with my husband. It all officially started twenty years ago and now we get to share this life filled with three beautiful children who all manage to drive us a little bonkers everyday. We wouldn't trade any of it for anything else in the world.

Be Inspired: Keeping Yourself Going

April 15, 2022

A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, J Crew Jean Overalls, How to wear a beret, Jackson Hole Diner, Retro Diners in New York

Keeping yourself going can be a tricky thing. Going into work everyday, commuting to and from places, dealing with bills, balancing worries and challenges, or raising a family. Life is stressful, full, and busy. When do you think about the things you want to accomplish for yourself your goals and dreams can seem daunting and impossible to achieve.

What always kept me going since I was a kid was having big dreams and goals. Despite my daily challenges, my dreams got me up in the morning and kept me going. As I have gotten older I have learned  that anything is possible but it can be difficult to keep dreams alive when you're so weary from all the things life throws at you. Whether you're tired physically, spiritually, emotionally, or mentally-your dreams can really seem far to reach. The important thing is to be aware of your struggles and find healthy ways to work through them.

Finding ways to keep yourself going is essential. Those dreams and goals you have are just as important as all the other things going on in your life. As impossible as some of my own personal goals seem, I do believe they will happen. How they will happen is mystery to me but believing that they will happen is sometimes enough to get me through the tough days.

Whatever it is you want out of life, don't give up and don't stop. Audrey Hepburn famously said, "Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I'm possible."

On Monday, July 12 I will be celebrating TEN years as a blogger. I first started blogging in 2011 on Bunny's Victory and from there I moved to A Vintage Nerd in 2013. For the past few months I have been updating my blog and freshening up sections to make it easier to use and more enjoyable. I aimed to finish all my updates before my big anniversary but it is still a work in progress.

That's the beauty of creating something, it is always a work in progress. I have learned so much from my years as a blogger but there have also been many times that I have fallen off the saddle. Whether it was blogger fatigue, writers block, life challenges, or just creative frustrations. What is important is getting back on the saddle when you have fallen off.

If you love something enough and are passionate about it, never give up. Keep going and moving forward because at the end of the day you know you are doing something that truly makes you happy.

My Wall of Movie Stars

May 13, 2021
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Old Hollywood Blog, Classic Film Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Retro Fashion Inspiration, Movie Star Wall Decor, Old Hollywood Photo Frames
A few years ago I decided to decorate a wall in my bedroom with photos of Old Hollywood movies stars that I admired. At the top of my wall collage I put a 8x10 photo of my mother from the 1960's. I then added stars from the 1920's-1960's like Mary Pickford, Norma Shearer, and Barbara Stanwyck.

I've always found the easiest way to add some decor and personal flare to your home is by decorating your walls. For the past few months I have been working on updating my wall. I decided that instead of having black and white photos I would add colors photos. I also concentrated on actresses photos from 1960's-1970's.

Here is my ode to Old Hollywood wall collage with my mothers photo still on top of course. She wasn't a movie star but she looked so beautiful in this photo that it would be an injustice not to hang it. For my updated collage I included Katherine Ross, Jean Seberg, Natalie Wood, Doris Day, Audrey Hepburn, and Catherine Deneuve.

How you like my updated wall of movie stars? What film stars would you add to your wall if you could?

5 Ways To Remember Audrey Hepburn in Your Everyday Life

May 01, 2021
A Vintage, Vintage Blogger, Classic Film Blog, Audrey Hepburn Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Old Hollywood Blog. Way to Remember Audrey
To celebrate what would have been Audrey Hepburn's 92 birthday (May 4th) I will be sharing a few posts that are dedicated to her. To start off Audrey Week I want to share with you 5 ways that you can remember Audrey in your everyday life.

Surround yourself with beauty and the things that bring you joy and peace.

After leaving Hollywood to raise her sons she deeply desired to live a more grounded and quiet life. She left Rome, Italy after her final divorce and moved to the town of Tolochenaz, Switzerland where she spent her last nine years of her life. She surrounded herself with a quaint home in the countryside, loyal friends, a loving partner, and her devoted sons. She was at her happiest surrounding herself with beauty and the things that brought her joy and peace.
Value the time spent with loved ones. Make those phone calls, write those letters, and give those hugs.

Audrey left her career at the height of it in 1967 to devote more time to raising her sons. She eventually returned to the films in 1976 but only did four more before she passed. We can wonder what sort of great films she would have made if she didn't step away from her craft but she choose to devote her time and energy to her family instead. It was virtually unheard of at the time. Audrey's decision to leave her career allowed her to focus completely on the joy and complexities of motherhood. She provided a normal childhood for her sons away from Hollywood and prying eyes.

Stand up for what you believe is the right thing for you to be doing.

When Audrey was filming Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) the studios wanted to remove the scenes where she would sing Moon River. Audrey stood up for herself and told them that this scene was important and it had to be in the film and stay in the film. The song became iconic just as her role as Holly Golightly.

Wear clothes that make you feel wonderful. Keep it simple, comfortable, and elegant. But always have fun with your wardrobe and allow the clothes you wear to help make you feel your best.

Audrey would collaborate with Hubert de Givenchy starting with the film, Sabrina (1953). He created simple yet beautiful pieces for Audrey that became the Audrey Style. Their collaboration and friendship lasted until her passing in 1993. Audrey once said in an interview, "I'm terribly self-conscious about myself. And clothes always give me a great deal of self-confidence."

Don't let the past haunt you but don't forget what you went through. You can take that pain and suffering and do good things with it for yourself and for others.

Audrey never forgot the aid that UNICEF gave to her as a child after WWII. She gave back in all the best ways she could and in 1989 she became the Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF.

Be Inspired: Navigating Through Seasonal Changes

March 13, 2021
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Retro Fashion Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, JCrew Green Sweater, Forever 21 Cap, Navigating through seasonal changes

When seasons change, our moods tend to shift as well. The hardest shift is usually when we go from the fall to winter or winter to spring. But things have been different lately because many of us are spending more time at home. And the things we love to do, we can't do. So the changing of the seasons has become a little more challenging that usual.

Here are some tips that you can try to help yourself navigate through the changing of the seasons:

Be gentle with yourself. Don't overdo things especially in the heat.
Alter your skin routine; SPF moisturizer for the summer/Hydrating masks for the winter.
Take walks when you can but pace yourself.
Drink plenty of water and take the supplements you need.
When there is the changing of time, embrace naps to get extra rest.
Reorganize your wardrobe and add pieces suited for the current season.
Find different ways to rest.
Pay close attention to how you are feeling because seasonal changes can bring depression.
Embrace the changes of the season in your own time.
Adjust your meals to include more seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Wearing What You Love

February 09, 2021

A Vintage Nerd, Retro Fashion Blog, 1970's Vintage, Retrolicious Red Cardigan, Modcloth Jean Skirt, Plus Size Retro Fashion

I struggled to find my own style within the vintage community for years. I experimented with true vintage going through most of the decades settling mainly on the 1940’s-1950’s. Although I enjoyed wearing the vintage pieces, I felt like the style I was acquiring was more like dress up.  It honestly felt costumey more than actual everyday clothes. I also struggle with the huge cost with vintage and the pressure to constantly prove that I was indeed a vintage girl.

Mixed with all of these conflicting feelings was also my lifestyle. When I started blogging and delving into vintage again (I dressed 1970’s in the 1990’s) I had really young children. Wearing true vintage was becoming a hazard especially since I can’t sew (because of my disability).

I learned through the years after I finally developed my own personal style, that you can still love vintage fashion and be a vintage girl at heart without looking like you stepped right out of 1949.

My personal style is now a happy blend of true vintage, retro, and modern pieces. I no longer feel the pressure to have to look or dress a certain way to prove my affinity for vintage.

Although it was a long process to get to this place, finding a sense of love and joy in my personal style became a self affirming act. It’s a gift to myself that boosted my confidence and self-esteem. Yes it’s just clothes but it’s also a great way to express your passions and who you are as a person. What do you love about your own personal style?

It was my 45th birthday recently and I cannot tell you how blessed I feel be able to be this age. It's been a rough year but if I can be honest I have had other rough years. Those past challenges taught me to just go with the flow as much as possible especially when tough times appear.

Now when it comes to my birthday I only things I wanted for myself was exactly what I got. A day with my favorite people, my four (six if you count the cats) best friends. The day was spent at home of course. My family decorated the house a bit then I blew out candles from my favorite cake. Throughout the day I was spoiled with gifts, phone calls, and texts.

If I could make 45 wishes for my birthday I would start with having the best birthday. Luckily for me that is exactly what I got.
