13 More 1970's Horror Movies That Are Still Terrifying Today

October 31, 2023

A Vintage Nerd, Horror Movies from the 1970s, Best Horror 1970s, Classic Movie Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog

Three years ago I put together a similar list but only for 1960's films. Then last year I shared 13 horror movies that are still terrifying today HERE. I thought I would share 13 more horror films from the 1970's that I think are still scary and creepy. While many 1960's films played on the psychological aspects of what makes us scared (i.e.; satanic cult, animals attacking, someone watching us), 1970's horror mixed what scares us with deep realism.

In the 1970's writers and directors took a step deep into horror by looking at the things that scare us and putting those scary things into our homes and everyday lives. You get horrors brought to us on our honeymoon, on a day out with friends, in our bedroom, in our town, and on our vacations. 1970's took all the things we personally fear and the things that society tells us to fear and brings it to us right in our faces. You can't hid under the bed or in the closet from it because its in our personal space. Talk about a super creepy approach to horror.

Some of my favorites from the 1970's are Daughters of Darkness (1971) and Suspiria (1977) because they are both hauntingly chilling but also incredibly visual and oddly beautiful. Another favorite is Stranger in Our House (1978) which happens to be a made-for-tv movie. Made-for TV movies are sometimes hard to find but worth watching. They made a lot of really good ones in the 1970's and 1980's.

How many of these 1970's horror movies have you seen? What are some of your favorites?

The Oscars in the 1970's

The 95th Oscars will be airing this weekend and I started to think about all the Oscars that I have watched. I think I have been watching it for over 40 years. I may have started around 1982 or 1983. All I know is that my grandma would put it on and I would be glued to the screen until the end. I didn't really recognize a lot of actors until I was a little older around the late 1980's and early 1990's. My grandma who gave me the gift of classic film, classic tv, and thrifting, also gave me the gift of watching the Oscars.

Like many of you I cannot wait to see who wins and who is wearing what. Here is a look at Oscars past with some images from the 1970's. Will you be watching the 95th Oscars this year?

13 1970's Horror Movies That Are Still Terrifying Today

October 13, 2022
A Vintage Nerd, 1970s Horror Movies, Halloween 1978, Classic Movie Blog, Vintage Blog, Old Horror Movies

Two ago I put together a list of 1960's horror movies that are still terrifying today which you can read HERE. I thought I would put together a list os 1970's horror movies that could spook you during this Halloween season.

1970's horror films shifted the world of horror for a few reasons. Many films had more graphic death scenes, they hid the horrors away only to make it 100 times more scarier because you had to use your imagination, the actual film used in the 1970's was grainer which gave the stories more of a documentary feel, we get introduced to the final girl idea, and many started out slow only to end brutally. 1970's horror films would tap into your deepest fears and settle there for years to come.

Films like The Exorcist (1973) and Halloween (1978) would haunt generations of kids because they introduced a realistic monster; the devil and a serial killer. While 1960's horror films played on the idea of innocence lost as a part of its scare factor, 1970's horror was raw and realistic. The characters in 1970's all got affected by whatever was happening even if it wasn't happening to them. 1970's horror also hinted on political, moral, spiritual, and socioeconomic issues but they were hidden under layers of fake blood, holy water, wires, and real estate.

Many of the films on this list had clear heroes and monsters but the heroes were always deeply affected by the actions of the monsters. Most times it left them brave and strong like it did with Laurie Strode (Halloween), Fischer (The Legend of Hell House), or in Ben Mears (Salem's Lot). But often in 1970's horror the reality of what the heroes faced destroyed them, often becoming a end product of the horror that they faced.

How many of these 1970's horror movies have you seen? What are some of your favorites?
