There isn't anything like the holidays in New York City. Despite the crowds of visitors, the city is a delight to spend time in. Exploring all the iconic sights and trying as many hot chocolate drinks as possible-the holidays in New York are magical.

For those who are disabled (or simply needing a walking aid) commuting through the city and navigating through the busy streets can be tricky. For this visit I took my fancy rhinestone cane by Fashionable Canes-which you can find HERE. It's sturdy, pretty, and can withstand the long walks on city streets.

If you would like to get your own fashionable cane you can use this link HERE

Walking in Style with Fashionable Canes

May 16, 2024

A Vintage Nerd, Fashionable Canes, Living with CMT, Stylish Canes, Blog Collaborations, Fashion stix, Fashionable folding canes
I know from personal experience that having to use a walking aid comes with challenges-both physical and mental. Accepting the use of a walking aid can be tricky. But once you do it then becomes all about finding the right walking aid.

Walking aids don't have to be some old clunky thing you use to help you walk better. It can become a part of your personal style. Fashionable Canes has canes that can give you the support you need while also being stylish.

My new cane from Fashionable Canes is lightweight, foldable, and stylish. I tried out my new trusty cane the other day while enjoying an outing in the city with my family. It felt sturdy and gave me all the support I needed while walking around the busy streets of Manhattan. Having the wrist strap on my cane also came in super handy when I needed to free my hand to do other things.

If you happen to need a walking aid to help you out during the day there is no reason why you can't do it in style. Are you interested in getting your own fashionable cane? You can get one by using this link HERE as well as my code avintagenerd-which will give you 15% off your purchase. This code will expire early July 2024 so if you do acquire one of your own, let me know how you liked using it.

We're All Pretty Bizarre From 80s Tees

February 26, 2024
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, 80s Tee, The Breakfast Club T-shirt, Blog Collaboration, Movie Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog

Back in 1985 the late John Hughes wrote the words, “We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all.” For those of you that grew up watching The Breakfast Club (1985) it was the first movie that really showed the complexities of being a teen. Trying to figure out who you are, peer pressure, cliques, feeling like an outcast, family turmoil, and the pressures from family-all were displayed in the characters in this John Hughes movie.

Although Hughes himself was in his thirties when he made this film, he never forgot what it was like to be a teen. He never forgot how odd we could all feel and no matter what our outsides looked liked we were all really going through the same things.

As I have entered my 48th year I have never forgotten how weird I am. This quote from this iconic film from the 80's is a reminder that all those things that make us who we are can be seen as bizarre and that some people hide it better than others. I have never been good at lying especially to myself-so I embrace the weird and bizarre and accept that it what it is. What you see is what you get and so much more.

We are all pretty bizarre, aren't we?

We Wish You A Most Excellent Christmas from 80s Tees

December 23, 2023
A Vintage Nerd, 80s Tees, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure Christmas, Christmas in New York, Blogger Collaboration, We Wish You A Most Excellent Christmas

It wasn't until Marlon Brando and James Dean burst onto the Hollywood scene in the 1950s, that the t-shirt became popular not only as a piece of clothing but as a sign of rebellion and masculinity.  The popularity of t-shirts grew exponentially in the 1970's and 1980's. Both women and men wore them as a symbol of their devotion to a band they loved to listen to or for the sheer casual, comfort of it all.
I personally love to wear tees because I feel you can share some of your personality through them. Not to mention that they are comfortable-which is a must when I am putting an outfit together. At 80s Tees you can find a variety of fun tees to express yourself. They have tees dedicated to 70's and 80's films, tv shows, and music. They also have a section for those who love the 90's and the 2000's. You can find tees devoted to all your favorites movies such as, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Back to the Future.
80s Tees also has hard-to-find designs from films such as; Bad News Bears, Airplane, and Willy Wonka. What I love about 80s Tees is their selection. My generation spent a lot of time on the boob tube watching endless hours of cartoons, music videos, tv shows, and films. Whatever I am looking for I can find at 80s Tees.
While spending an afternoon in the city during the holidays I couldn't help but wear my tee from 80s Tees. Nothing says Merry Christmas better than the Wyld Stallyns from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989).
Check out 80s Tees for your next order of super, awesome t-shirts. And I wish you the most excellent Christmas!

Watching Movies on Redbox

November 13, 2023

A Vintage Nerd, Redbox, Blog Collaboration, Movie Rental Site, Classic Movie Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog

Redbox recently reached out to me because they heard I was a big fan of DVD Netflix. They wanted to send me a box of goodies and to enjoy watching some movies. I can't tell you how surprised I was to receive all of the things I needed to have an awesome night in front of the boob tube. They sent me a cozy blanket, some treats, a gift card, movie codes, popcorn with a popcorn container, and a cup with their logo. Everything was super cute and my kids are already clamoring on what movies we get to watch together.

Redbox is an easy and super affordable site where you can rent movies. You can rent two different ways, on-demand streaming and a physical dvd from one of their many kiosks. Being a mom of three I am always watching my wallet. I compared their prices for movie rentals to what I found on my firestick and I have to say that their prices are literally half of what you would pay in other places. I was happily surprised by this and also extremely excited because now I can watch the movies I have been looking for without worrying about high costs.

I can't tell you how cool it is to have access to films that I have been wanting to watch without breaking the bank. That means I can watch stories unfold before my eyes worry free unless I am watching a horror movie.  Redbox will now be my go-to for movie watching galore. I hope you can check out it and if you do let me know how you liked it.

On Monday, July 12 I will be celebrating TEN years as a blogger. I first started blogging in 2011 on Bunny's Victory and from there I moved to A Vintage Nerd in 2013. For the past few months I have been updating my blog and freshening up sections to make it easier to use and more enjoyable. I aimed to finish all my updates before my big anniversary but it is still a work in progress.

That's the beauty of creating something, it is always a work in progress. I have learned so much from my years as a blogger but there have also been many times that I have fallen off the saddle. Whether it was blogger fatigue, writers block, life challenges, or just creative frustrations. What is important is getting back on the saddle when you have fallen off.

If you love something enough and are passionate about it, never give up. Keep going and moving forward because at the end of the day you know you are doing something that truly makes you happy.

Have you ever felt like you were born in the wrong decade? Wished you could be hanging out in the swingin' 60's or the grungy 90's? I think its totally normal to want to explore other time periods. And more than okay to feel so connected to another time period that you wish you could have lived in it yourself.

I just love this tee by Nicole from Darling in Dots. Its super comfy and stylish.  The truth is, sometimes you want to wear a tee that says exactly how you feel. You can find this tee and more at the Darling in Dots shop HERE.

A Vintage Nerd Book Club: This Was Hollywood: Forgotten Stars and Stories

April 21, 2021
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, This Was Hollywood, Old Hollywood Blog, This Was Hollywood Book, Classic Film Blog
My passion for Old Hollywood runs deep. It's nostalgic. It's artistic. It's a reflection of our own humanity. I find the art form of film endlessly intriguing. Once I begin researching a film or someone involved in the film, I go down a deep rabbit hole. My research has me discovering new things all the time. It is continuously fascinating.

Recently I came across a great Instagram account called This Was Hollywood that is run by a fellow cinephile named Carla Valderrama. You can tell by Carla's posts that she had an endless curiosity for Old Hollywood. I immediately connected to that because that is the foundation of everything I do creatively. It all goes back to my love for Old Hollywood.

Carla published an amazing book that I knew I had to share with all of you. It is called This Was Hollywood, which you can find and purchase HERE. My first thoughts on this book is that it is truly a must have for all levels of film lovers. Whether you are just delving into classic film or you feel like you are a pro, this is the sort of book that you will find easy to connect with.

Honestly there isn't one thing I didn't enjoy about this book. I love that it is hardcover, the size, the book jacket, the font, the endless array of photos, the quotes, the captions, and even the table of contents. To me this book reads like a love letter to Old Hollywood. I can see and feel the love and joy that went into the making of this. There are 234 pages of forgotten Old Hollywood stars and stories about their lives and careers that will inspire you, move you, and leave you feeling like you spent time with a good friend.

As a certified bookworm, nerd, and cinephile I felt like buying this book was a gift that will continuously keep giving. That is because every time I read it I am always discovering something new. It is visually pleasing and reads like an informative letter from a friend rather than a long winded textbook.

This Was Hollywood is a beautiful book that celebrates the magic of Old Hollywood. I hope you get a chance to read Carla's book and don't forget to check out her Instagram.

A Vintage Nerd Book Club: Wear Vintage Now

I get asked a lot about where to begin when it comes to vintage fashion and care. Honestly it can get very overwhelming if you don't know what styles you like best. I dressed 1970's in the 1990's so I knew some things about vintage but when I started dabbling with it again back in 2011 I felt like I didn't know anything anymore. It took me a while to figure out what decades I preferred to wear, what colors, and how to care for my pieces.

When Margaret from Denisebrain Vintage contacted me about reviewing her book dedicated to vintage fashion I couldn't wait to share it with you all. I know I could have used this book which to me is more like a vintage guide, when I came back into the vintage world all those years ago. It would have saved me so much time and money.

In Wear Vintage Now you have chapters covering how to wear and care for vintage, how to find the right fit for your figure, and great tips on how to find the perfect vintage accessories. I love that Margaret also covers how to search for vintage online, all the decades of the 20th Century, the variety of ways you can style vintage, and knowing the true value of a vintage piece.

I am a visual person and this book includes a multitude of photos to help you visualize all the tips that she shares. The description of each chapter is detailed and easy to follow. What I love about a book that is trying to show me or teach me something is when the information is broken down to make it easy enough to follow and understand. Shopping for vintage or create your own vintage style can already be overwhelming but this book can really help in your journey with vintage.

If you are looking for a guide to help you navigate fashion in the vintage world I highly recommend this book. Even if you are looking for a refresher on vintage fashion this book will do the trick. You can purchase this book HERE on Etsy. You can also find Margaret on Instagram HERE and her website Desnisebrain HERE.

Be Inspired: CMT Awareness Challenge

This month is CMT Awareness Month I’ve been participating in a CMT Awareness Challenge. I have and will be sharing videos via my Instagram stories and answering questions all month long about living life with CMT.⠀

What is CMT? It’s short for Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease and it affects the peripheral nerves down your arms and legs. As I age it ages with me so the challenges of living with a physical disability are very different from when I was in my 20’s than now in my 40’s. Because of it I also suffer from fatigue, weakness, poor balance, restless sleep, challenges walking/going up stairs, and intervals of lack of energy. ⠀

I define myself as a vintage blogger but I do live with CMT and my leg braces are noticeable in my fashion outfit posts. They are a big part of my day and being able to share this part of myself with you is very humbling. It took me a while to get to a comfortable place where I can share more about this part of myself but doing this challenge and sharing here on my blog has felt like a safe space to share.
All my videos will be saved in a highlights section called CMT Awareness Challenge. I hope you can join me as I try and spread more awareness about CMT and maybe learn more about me as well.

A Vintage Nerd is my safe space where I can share my love and passion for all things Old Hollywood through fashion, film, books, and lifestyle. I, like many of you have been home dealing with a new normal with quarantine living. I am not a preachy person but I always remember this huge piece of advice my father gave me when I was pregnant with my first child. He said, "Don't take any unnecessary risks."

Every since he laid that piece of wisdom on me I always hear him say it to me in my head and its the biggest piece of advice I adhere to everyday. As a woman with a physical disability and a mother of three children I have to be diligent and wise about the decisions I make when it comes to our well-being. Whether you believe it helps or not more than ever we need to choose to be kind. When we wear a mask in public we are choosing to be kind to ourselves, our loved ones, and to the public.

Even if you don't believe this small act keeps people safe it can help alleviate peoples stress and anxiety. I do not personally suffer from anxiety but I do suffer from anxiety (or what I like to call "deep worries") when it comes to my physical well-being because of my disability and when it comes to the safety and well-being of my children. Last time I went to the park with my children we wore masks and social distanced with others but not everyone did and frankly my anxiety went through the roof.

I believe my fathers advice is good sage advice, "Don't take any unnecessary risks." And I will add to that by saying that it is cool to be kind. One simple act of wearing a mask might really make a difference to someone else even if you can't see it. Let's try to think of others as we take care of ourselves and our loved ones during this unprecedented time. Choose to be kind.

Be Inspired: Embrace It

December 15, 2019
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Vintage Blogger, Retro Style Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Trendable Blog, Living with CMT, Fashion and Leg Braces, Disabled Fashion, CMT Blog, CMT Inspiration

Through my blog I have been lucky to found my voice when it comes to Old Hollywood, Vintage Fashion, Retro Lifestyle, and all the smaller categories in between. What I have struggled with is finding a balance between my passions as a vintage blogger and my everyday life living with a disability. I didn't want to come across as needing attention or attracting negative attention because of my disability. I needed to find a balance between both words because I feel like it is important that I share this part of myself.

When I share photos of my vintage inspired outfits my leg braces are part of that look. I didn't like the idea of hiding them because I tried that in college and that was an unpleasant experience. I also didn't want you to think that this blog has suddenly become a blog solely about a woman living with a disability. My main focus here at A Vintage Nerd is to share my love of vintage through Old Hollywood and vintage inspired fashion. But embracing my disability more meant that I would have to find a way to incorporate my disability with my blog. And I think I finally have.

There is a new year on the horizon and I decided that my goals for the new year would entail me embracing the changes in my body and with my disability, finding peace and healing with some truths I have discovered about my life, and moving forward to continue to live my life passionately by continuing to fill it with the people and things I love. I hope you will embrace new things for the new year as well.

One of the steps to embracing things more can be seen in my collaboration with a fellow blogger named Lainie at Trend-Able. Her blog is dedicated to helping those with physical disabilities.  In this post I share a little more about my history with CMT (Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease). While working on this post I realized that I really haven't shared my personal story with CMT; how I was diagnosed and my struggles. It took me a while to find the right words because although I am ready to share it I am also a private person in many ways. I shared what I could and you can read all of it HERE

What have you recently been embracing more of? What will you embrace in the coming new year?

A Vintage Nerd Book Club: Living With Coco Chanel

August 20, 2019
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Retro Blog, 1960's Casual Style, Retro Fashion, Peter Pan Collar, Vintage Nerd, Vintage Reading, Coco Chanel, Book Club, Vintage Book Club, Coco Chanel Book Review

We all know that Coco Chanel was one of the most innovative and artistic fashion designers of the 20th Century. She is known for her little black dress, Chanel No. 5 Perfume, and her handbags. But what kept inspiring her through the years. One cannot create unless they are inspired and our environment has a huge influence on us. I know that I am very environment oriented and the times when I have been least creative were the times when my environment wasn't the best place to be at.

For Coco Chanel, where she grew up, where she later lived, and the landscapes around her influenced her view of the world and her creativity. If you have ever wanted to learn more about Coco Chanel and her influences, Living With Coco by Caroline Young will give you a deeper insight into her world and how it continuously inspired her.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I learned about Coco Chanel just in the first few pages. The author really gives a full picture of who Chanel was as a person and then explores how her environment influenced her. One example that I enjoyed reading was when Chanel began critiqueing the clothes that women wore at the races, describing the hats as "enormous loaves on their heads, constructions made of feathers and improved with fruits and plumes." Not only did she find herself as a young women wanting to stay apart from the crowd but I couldn't help but think perhaps this inspired her desire for minimalism in her clothing and handbag lines, as well as her perfumes. She wanted women to feel inspired and break away from the confines of the corsets and large brimming hats and to live comfortably and freely.

The author not only explores her humble beginnings but her rise to becoming an iconic fashion designer. I found that the more I read the more I wanted to know about Chanel. Not only does the author explore the landscapes and environments that helped shape Chanels's view of the world around her but she also gives us a full picture of who she was as an artist and a women.

Loving vintage fashion is a good thing. A very good thing, in my book anyway. I think that when we learn more about those who created the fashion we love it can make us appreciate the creativity of those designs even more. Reading Living With Coco was not only informative but really inspiring. She was an incredible woman who created a life for herself with her own sets of rules. She was a woman ahead of her time and knowing more about her has inspired me endlessly.

If you are interested in learning more about Coco Chanel you can purchase the book HERE.
