Guide to Making Travel Easier

April 07, 2023

This February I visited one of my besties for a few days in Florida. I was able to spend much needed time with her as well as spend time with my brother who moved there a few years ago. I haven't traveled on my own since my last visit to England in 2016. I didn't know how it was going to be. I was a bit worried because of all the horrible flight videos I saw on social media. My anxiety went through the roof. I don't have anxiety for normal day-to-day life but when it comes to living with my disability, I do.

I try and learn from the things that worked and the things that didn't from any trip I take whether it is a day trip, a few days, or more than a few days. I also take into account who I am traveling with, how long I am staying, the budget I have, the weather, and what activities I am planning to do.

Here are some tips to help make traveling a little bit easier for you especially if you have a physical disability or are traveling with children:

  • Do a lot of research: find the best prices for your budget, make a list of the things you want to do, find out what time things open and close, find places to eat that you or your family would like, etc. Write it all down somewhere. It will help you on your trip tremendously.
  • Add apps to your phone: Add apps to your phone that would aid you on your trip. Add maps, translation, or museum apps. Why not use the technology that you have to help you.
  • Traveling internationally: Get the best price for you cash when you exchange it, get a debit card you can use in lieu of cash, get a SIM card for your phones for the country you are in, and get a international power adaptor.
  • Wheelchair access: Contact the airport and airlines that you are using and get your hands on a wheelchair. If you have challenges with walking like I do or other health issues, use this service. It will help immensely.
  • Pack smart: Take into account the weather, what activities you are doing, and how long you are staying. Pack what you need and maybe one extra of everything. I personally don't like to buy something that I could take with me because I don't like to waste time or money shopping for what I could have taken from home. Pick a color palette for your outfits so that you can interchange pieces easily and pack less. Keep some space in your luggage for items you purchased on your trip.
  • Essential pieces: Pick a cross body handbag and a light jacket that could go with all the outfits you plan to wear. I prefer a cross body bag because you can keep it in front of you--just make sure it has zippers.
  • Bring what you really need: If you need a rollator or a cane, put your pride aside and take it with you. You might need these walking aids and you should take any risks with your health or well-being.
  • Plan carefully but be open to adventure: Find something to everyone to enjoy but be open to discovering new things.

How to Destress with Panic Pete

These days we are all feeling the affects of the stress. Each of us are attempting to deal with it the best way we can especially within a quarantine environment. We take walks when we can, watch a good movie, drink a cup of hot tea, or listen to music, all as a means to destress.

This is where a little fella called Panic Pete comes into play. Give him a good squeeze and his eyes, nose, and ears all pop out. I mean adding one to your list of destressers is not a bad idea given he's cute, retro, affordable, and gets the job done. Think of him as the ultimate stress ball. I scored mine recently at Bobb Howard's General Store which is a local retro candy shop that doesn't just have a selection of nostalgic treats but also nostalgic toys and gifts.

These days I'm trying to add in as much fun and cuteness into my life as I can. Panic Pete does the trick for me. Have you ever used stress balls to destress?

4 Tips on How to Take Care of Your Vintage Magazines

April 06, 2020
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Vintage Blogger, Retro Lifestyle, Vintage Magazine, Teen Magazine, Sixties Magazine, Vintage Lifestyle, Cat Eyeglasses, Vintage Gloves, How to Care for Vintage Magazines, Vintage Magazines, Old Paper

I always get asked how do I take care of my vintage magazines. I have magazines that range from the 1930's to the present. I even have all of my teen magazines from the 1980's. Sadly, a lot of magazines are no longer being published. Because many of these magazines are rare and very old, we should try and take care of them. I feel like vintage magazines are pieces of history and they should be preserved as best as possible.

So how can you take care of your vintage magazines? Here are some tips that helped me:

  • Keep them in an organized manner. I tend to stack each of mine right side up then right side down until I have all of them stacked.
  • Store them in a cool, dry area. A good place would be your basement or a closet.
  • If they are not on a shelf, store them in a plastic bin. A cardboard box would be easily penetrable to insects and dampness.
  • Place them in clear plastic dust jackets.

If you are looking for some good vintage magazines these are my recommendations; Good Housekeeping. Life, Teen, Seventeen, Women’s Day, and Photoplay. And if you are looking for places where you can buy some vintage magazines other than Etsy and Ebay, check out Wolfgang's and Joe's Paper Shack.

6 Tips on Balancing Creativity and Motherhood

How did the ladies in the sixties handle their home and kids on a daily basis and attempt to pursue creativity? I think it must have been as challenging for them then as it is now. I think women today are juggling even more than women fifty plus years ago. And the biggest challenging for those of us who have pursued a family life and a career or creative pursuits is keeping it all balanced. And let's be honest, it is not easy.

When I went to do some shoots recently at the TWA Hotel I decided to bring along all three of my children and my husband for support. They never saw this location and I wanted to share it with them. I didn't take into account that my husband was exhausted from his intense work week and I didn't pack things to keep the children occupied because I assumed I would be done quickly. I was wrong.

I thought a lot about that day. I can say that for three kids they behaved pretty well. They weren't running around like maniacs or screaming or bothering each other. But at some point during the day I felt completely overwhelmed with paying attention to them and their needs and trying to figure out my next photo shoot. I not only got mentally blocked but I just felt utterly defeated at one point.

What I realized and learned that day is that it isn't easy for me to shut myself off from mommying and then switch roles to focus on being a vintage nerd. I realized that going back and forth from the two is very challenging because both are very important to me. Its important that I am always available and aware of my children and their needs and it is important for me to express myself as a creative.

So I put together a few tips that I learned the hard way. I have not perfected this process by any means. But I have become more aware of the challenges of balancing my two worlds and with a lot of patience I will work through them.

Here are 6 Tips on how I balance creativity and motherhood:

Bring a friend or your spouse for support. They can keep an extra eye on the kids and keep them in line.

Pack things in a bag for them. Pack snacks, water, and activities for them. That way there is a slim chance you will hear, "I'm hungry" or "I'm bored" while you are in the middle of a shoot or a painting.

Give yourself a certain time frame to be done. Timing creativity makes creating 1,000 times more challenging. If you are like me, I enjoy the process of creativity flowing and moving through me. When you are on a schedule it makes allowing that so much more difficult but children need a time frame because otherwise they can get antsy and then drive you nuts. When that happens creativity escapes the room and leaves because it cannot flourish in a chaotic environment.

Explain to the kids what are you are trying to do. That way they can get a visual of your plan and also feel like they are a part of your creative process.

Give your children a job to do that can actually help you move the creative process along. They can take your photos for you, help you bring props to your shoots, pass paints and brushes to you,  carry your gear for you, etc. Whatever it is that you are working on, if you include them in a small way to be your little helpers it really makes them feel like they are a part of this special work.

Take lots of deep breathes. Try to keep your patience. Keep everyone informed of your needs and concerns. Communication is important.

Beauty Tips: Aging Grace-Fully

January 21, 2020
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Vintage Blogger, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Old Hollywood Blog, Grace Kelly, Aging Gracefully, Tips on how to age gracefully, Retro Beauty Tips, Retro Beauty, Old Hollywood Stars

Who wouldn't mind aging gracefully like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn? They were timeless beauties who refrained from surgical enhancements and took care of their skin the old fashioned way.

Let's be honest, women go through a lot of changes in their lives that do affect the quality of their skin. Aside from genetics and lifestyle we also have to take into account pregnancies, life as a mom, busy schedules, illness, and menopause to name a few. Taking care of our skin can be a gift we give to ourselves after all the things we do in a single day.

I put together a little list that might help you preserve the beauty that is you. Is there anything else you would add to this list?

  1. Genetics: I must point out that the way many people age can be due to genetics. Some people look super young in their 50's and some people don't. With that said-its the luck of the draw. Some of us will get a little help from our genes and some of us not too much. Whichever it may be, just embrace it because that cannot be changed (unless you go under the knife).
  2. STAY OUT OF THE SUN: One of the biggest ways we can damage and age our skin is by overexposure to the sun. You shouldn't sun bathe for hours or go to a tanning booth every week. Its just plain suicide for your skin. We do shed our skin but yearly overexposure to sunlight in large doses will just put your skin in danger. You can get sun spots, discoloration, severe dryness, and wrinkles just to name a few. If you are outside at all, put sunscreen on all the time and wear hats.
  3. Drink LOTS of water: Our bodies are mostly made up of water so hydrate it! Soda and juices just have lots of sugar in it. Choose water  because its the only drink that truly quenches the thirst.
  4. Know your skin: Know what type of skin you have so you know how to moisturize it. I have normal to dry skin and its sensitive. So I wash my face everyday, moisturize in the morning and evening, and I try and use as many "for sensitive skin" products as possible with SPF.
  5. Beauty Regime: Treat your skin to facials, body scrubs, and massages. It does the body good. You don't need to do it every month but once in a while is a nice treat. Also, create a beauty regime for yourself. If you know you skin type and its needs try and get products that will help you as you go throughout your busy day. Exfoliate twice a week, moisturize day and night, underage creams, and weekly masks. Create regime that works for you and for your skin.
  6. Wearing Makeup :  Wear makeup as an enhancer not as something to completely cover you up. Try and refrain from wearing makeup when you can. Let your skin breathe. And never go to sleep with your makeup on.
  7. Get a check up: Make an appointment with a Dermatologist. It's always good to know what is going on with your skin and to tend to that.
  8. Feed your face: Eat good foods because it does show up on your skin. If your diet is made up of greasy fast food you will tend to have breakouts and your skin will look unhealthy. Try and eat some fruit and veggies during the day. Stay away from soda and too much junk food. Remember your skin is the largest organ on your body!
  9. What you put in will come out: Heavy smoking, drinking, and taking drugs isn't good for your body, period. Smoking will dry out your skin and make it look grey and pasty. Drinking will make your skin look bloated and heavy. Drugs will age you prematurely and destroy your skin. What you put into your body will show itself on your skin, period.
  10. Gym time: Do some sort of exercise for your overall health. Whether its walking, jogging, swimming.....just sitting around isn't good for anyone. Get up and do something-you will be tired at first but eventually it will help you feel better.
  11. Live life fully but with caution: There are some folks who have lived hard lives and you can see it clearly on their faces. Some people cannot escape that reality but others may have more choices. If you are one who has choices then live your life fully but do not put yourself in possible dangerous situations-in the end it all affects you.

7 Easy Tips on How I Created My Personal Style

April 17, 2019
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blogger, Cats Like Us, Modcloth Plaid Dress, Vintage Lifestyle Blogger, Plus Size Fashion, Curvy Blogger, Plaid Dress, 1960's Beret, Vintage Inspired Fashion, Fashion Blogger, Creating Your Own Styles, Tips on How To Create Your Own Stye

People often ask me how did I figure out my style and why do I wear what I wear. The truth is it took me a while to figure out my current style. Keep in mind that style is like most things, it has its ebbs and flows. I started out by wearing true vintage from head to toe and I had a lot of fun with it. That is until I realized it really didn't suit my lifestyle, my budget, or my current state of mind.

These days I blend true vintage pieces with modern vintage inspired pieces and retro pieces for good measure. I mix it all up and I stick to two simple rules I have given myself: it has to be pleasing to my eyes and it has to be comfy. If the aesthetic of the colors or pieces don't make me feel good then I will not wear it. I also have a color palette that I stick to. My main colors are red, green, and blue. My secondary colors are white, black, grey, and occasionally yellow.

Having a color palette and sticking to my two rules allows me to to mix and match my pieces easily while always feeling both cute and comfy in what I am wearing. I cannot deny that wearing true vintage makes me feel amazing but I also have found it challenging to wear true vintage while out with my family. My children are young and active and I wanted to create a style for myself that felt true to my love of vintage all the while versatile enough so that I can join family activities without feeling like I was overdressed or going to destroy a vintage piece.

My last tip is to remember to have fun. If you aren't enjoying the process and it becomes too overwhelming then take a step back. Look through what you already have and play around with it some more.

My Tips on How I Created My Own Personal Style:

1- Understand that style will come in its ebbs and flows
2- Be open to change and to working with where you are in your
life at that given moment
3- Work with your budget and lifestyle, not against it
4-Try blending vintage pieces with modern pieces.
Play around with the various types of fashion out there.
5- Create a color palette for yourself. What are the colors that look best on you and
that you love. Choose three main colors and a few secondary colors.
6- Think cute and comfy. It should be pleasing to your eye all the while being
incredibly comfortable. If you aren't comfortable with what you are wearing then it will show.
7- Have fun with experimenting with fashion.

Inspired But Tired: 6 Tips To Keep Your Inspiration Flowing

April 11, 2018
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Valfre Clothing, Valfre Inspired but Tired Top, Sixties Style Inspiration,Tips to keep being inspired, Retro Fashion Blog, Forever 21 Beret

Keeping your inspiration juices flowing is a tricky business especially when we are juggling so much on a daily basis. So how can we keep our inspiration muses happy when we are just so darn tired all the time? I am going to share what has worked for me and hope that it may help you keep inspiration at your fingertips.

  • Purge. Keep your home environment clean and happy. Get rid of piles and clutter. Having a comfy home environment will allow you to keep a clearer head. A disorganized home will just bog you down and drain all the creativity out of you. I know you're tired but if you're able to put in the extra time to do this it will make a huge difference, I promise you.
  • After you have cleaned and purged your home, car, office....throw in some inspirational items. Freshen up your bedroom with a new set of sheets, get some potted plants or flowers to brighten your space, and add items that bring positivity to you and those around you. It could be books of quotes, pretty pictures to hang on the walls, or sweet smelling candles. Surrounding yourself with things that make you smile and it will help keep you centered and focused.
  • Hitting a wall and not able to edit one more picture or write one more paragraph? Play music that makes you feel joyful and blast it. Don't want to disturb the neighbors, then blast it in your headphones. Pick any Bee-Gees song and your mood will brighten up within minutes.
  • We love vintage. We gravitate to all things old and sometimes dusty but by golly we love old stuff. Go to your local flea market, grab tickets to one of Fathom Events TCM Film Series specials and see Rebel Without A Cause on the big screen, take a morning trip to your favorite vintage shop, or pop in a dvd of a classic film that you know will put a smile on your face no matter how many times you see it (one of mine is The Women).
  • Rummage through your closet closely and see if there is something you haven't worn in a while and wear it. All dressed up with no place to go? Its okay. Sometimes just dolling up and getting yourself all extra pretty will make you feel good and your inspirational muse may just make a visit.
  • Lastly, just go. Just slap on that lipstick and put your favorite outfit on and go out and take some pictures. Lots of times I am not in the mood to dress up or I have to figure out how to juggle the kids with taking pictures but what I have done lately is just doll up, grab the kids, and head to the park. I hand over my phone to my daughter who proceeds to snap about 10-25 photos. I look through them and mark my favorites and I am done. I spend about 10-20 minutes on a shoot and the kids are having a blast running around the park and everyone goes home having done something fun.

I hope these tips help a little. I know how hard it can be to keep yourself inspired and in positive spirits but try some of these tips out. They may just help. What do you do to keep yourself inspired?

How to Wear A Beret Four Different Ways

November 11, 2017
A Vintage Nerd, Beret Fashion, How to wear a beret, Vintage Beret, Retro Fashion Blog

The weather here in New York has been crazy these days. One day its warm, one day its cold, and told its freezing. But one accessory I always feel comfortable wearing no matter what the weather is like is a beret.

The beret is one of those hats that has stood the test of time. It is used in the military, in high fashion, and as daily wear. Women sported berets in all various shapes and sizes from the turn of the century until now. We have had knitted berets, felt berets, fabric berets, and crocheted berets. I even wore a beret with cat ears on it once. They are comfortable to wear, easy to put on, and stylish.

No matter what the weather is like in your part of the world, try on a beret. And if you decide to try one on, here are a four ways that you could wear your beret inspired from the 1940's to the 1960's.

Below: Berets in the 1940's were worn mainly to the side of the head. It was also worn that way in the 1930's as well.

Below: Berets in the 1950's were worn mainly at the top of the head or towards the back of the head. If you feel like your beret would fall off you can always attach a bobby pin to it so that it can stay in place.

Below: Berets in the 1960's were worn mainly pulled down covering the ears. They also tipped their berets backwards on the head, like pillbox hat. It was also worn similarly in the 1930's.

Keep in mind that in a decade like the 1960's they styled the beret in multiple ways. They wore them on the side, on the top of the head, or covering the ears. It seems to me they took all the ways that the beret was worn prior to the 1960's and used styles all within that decade.

4 Fun Ways To Wear a Scarf

October 22, 2017
A Vintage Nerd, Scarf Tutorial, Vintage Blog, Retro Fashion Blog, Vintage Inspired Fashion, Beret Fashion

"Tis the season for Fall jackets and scarves. One of my favorite accessories for the fall is a long scarf. Not the knitted kind, which I save for the winter weather, but the cotton sort that can be easily wrapped around your neck for warmth yet light enough not to make you sweat under all your fall layers.

I thought I would share with you four fun ways that you can wear a scarf. These are four easy peasy ways to accessorize and bring some character to your outfit.

  • 1. Drape delicately over one shoulder
  • 2. Place over your neck and take one side and toss it over your shoulder
  • 3. Fold in half, place over your shoulder, put the loose ends side threw the hole of the opposite side to create a knot
  • 4. Drape over your neck and let it hang loose

Th use of scarves has been in vogue throughout the fashion of the last century. Tied around the neck, used as a headband, covering hair during wartime, or even used like a shawl. Sometimes wearing vintage can be as simple as wearing an accessory in a vintage manner to accentuate your outfit.

4 Tips On How To Spring Clean Your Vintage

April 17, 2015
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Organizing Vintage, Tips on Spring Cleaning, How To Organize, Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning can be so much fun. For me, its tough to start the process but once I do I cannot stop. I love the outcome of purging and sorting and tweaking things up a bit here and there. The best part of spring cleaning is that most of the steps you would use to clean out your makeup or your refrigerator are very much the same.

But when it comes to vintage I think it gets a tad bit tricky to maneuver.  Think about it. Vintage never goes out of style because its already dated. So how in the heck are we to find our way through all of our vintage items and decide what we will keep and what we won't? Most of us just tend to keep everything because of the "just in case" or the "you never know" factors. What happens then is we end up with piles and stashes of items that we don't use, never have used, really don't like, or even don't fit us properly.

One of the things I love about vintage dresses is how feminine and beautiful I feel when I am wearing them. But what if I have a dress that "sort of almost" fits me or that I love the color but not the decade its from? What is a girl to do?

A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Organizing Vintage, Tips on Spring Cleaning, How To Organize, Spring Cleaning

Here are four easy tips that may help you spring clean your vintage:
  • Don't go through all of your collections all at once. Do them in parts. For example, your dresses then your shoes then your jewelry then you hats, etc. If not it will really be too overwhelming to be able to use your good judgement on what you will keep and what you won't.
  • Lay out everything you have from that particular collection. Lay out all your dresses so you can see everything you have. Don't forget to pull out the ones that you have in other places. You really want to take a good gander at what you have.
  • Ask yourself what fits amazing and what doesn't. Don't keep things that you know do not fit you well. You want what you wear to feel good on you and you want to feel fabulous so wearing something that is ill-fitted will just make you uncomfortable and rob you of that fabulousity.
  • Separate your pieces that you have worn many, many times. If you have worn a dress many times and many people have seen you in it, put it away somewhere else. Give that dress a rest and your other dresses a chance to be wore and shown off.
I hope these tips help you in decluttering your vintage a bit and bring more order to your stashes of goodies. What tips do you use when spring cleaning your vintage?

6 Useful Pinterest Overhaul Tips

March 05, 2015
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Pinterest Organization Tips

I recently did an overhaul of my Pinterest boards and wanted to share with you a few tips that may help you organize your Pinterest.
  • Create a visual list of your boards like I did in the photos below. That way you can via pen and paper figure out where you want to switch boards, add boards, or rename boards. It made my overhaul so much easier to do.
  • Make a list of the boards that need some work on like in the photo above.
  • Since your boards are seen in rows of five, have a theme going so they can flow together.
  • Don't avoid your Pinterest for too long like I did. Add the Pinterest button onto your internet search engine, that way it will be easier to pin things to your boards.
  • Building your pins on your boards is like working on a house. There is always something to work on so just do it little by little. Maybe post some pins for 20 minutes everyday to start with.
  • Share your board links on your blog posts if you have a blog. That way your readers could be introduced to your Pinterest and also may find some new inspiration from some of your boards.

I have finished reorganizing and renaming a few boards already. I also added a few new ones dedicated to WWI, the 1960's, and a few television shows. My next step in this overhaul process is to continue filling up my boards. I like having them teeming with inspirational photos.

What are some of your useful overhaul tips for Pinterest? Do you find inspiration on Pinterest? What are your favorite types of boards?

How To Make The Perfect Snowball

January 10, 2015
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, 1940s Winter in New York, Vintage Lifestyle Blog

Today it snowed enough that the kiddies were able to play a bit in our backyard. My youngest took out a toy that we recently purchased on a trip to a old fashioned mom and pop candy store. I will be sharing with you all more about this neat little shop but for now I would like to share with you a toy that makes the perfect snowballs.

Since it was purchased in this retro shop I figured it was an old fashioned toy. My research online has led me to believe that it is indeed a vintage styled toy but unfortunately I have not been able to find out the year it was made. If any of you know, could you share it with me? Thanks!

Each of my children were given a bucket and shovel but it was the snowball maker that stole the show. I cannot tell you how neat this toy is. It is so easy to use. You just scoop up the snow by opening the toy like a set of tongs. Once the snow is inside it forms a perfect round snowball.

I think this will be our go-to toy for this winter and we may even have to grab two more for our kiddies.

After a little snow fight my children decided to make their first little snow people. I didn't have anything set up for this so my husband and I got creative. He grabbed some little sticks from the yard and I grabbed some things from our miscellaneous drawer in the kitchen and some left over candy canes and a masterpiece was created!

When you are first starting out in the wonderful world of vintage it can be very, very overwhelming. You may worry what decade to try first, where to shop, and basically how to pull off a look. When I first started I was very overwhelmed. To top it off I didn't have a lot of time, money, or resources. I did however discover more and more vintage blogs. Because of these bloggers I learned a great deal about creating a vintage style, how to shop, what to look for, and so much more.

Here on this post you will every single post I could find that vintage bloggers have written on the topic of dressing vintage. I do still recommend you keep on researching because the more you read about it, the more you will learn, and the more you can apply to your own unique vintage look.

I also included articles written about vintage and vintage wardrobes. I hope you find this list useful and I also have a Fashion & Beauty category on my blog if you want to take a peak on some of my tips as well.
