When you take a look at the amount of classic films set in the jungles of Africa you would be quite surprised. Or perhaps not. In the 1950's heaps of action and adventure films were set with the jungles of Africa as their backdrop. There are twelve films alone that Johnny Weissmuller starred in as Tarzan. Trader Horn was the first film ever that was shot in Africa as a location and not a documentary.
Each film explores the mysteries of Africa as the characters go on adventures that lead to treasure, romance, and safaris. Each of these films is based on a book of the same name as the film title, so if you find the film interesting enough I encourage you to find the book and compare the two. Most likely it will be just as adventurous reading these tales set in Africa as it is watching it!
Have you seen any of these recommendations? Are you a fan of the Tarzan film series? Have you ever found the films set in Africa to have an adventurous vibe to them?
Very much so! It often seems like script writers and others behind the scenes are keen to capitalize on the dangerous, thrilling, uncertain sides of "the dark continent" (to use a vintage term). Even as recently as flicks like Out of Africa and The English Patient, we still get a strong sense of this and I doubt, for better or worse, that it's something Hollywood will ever part ways with entirely.

Sorry, longgg day (and month so far). Goodness, I didn't mean The English Patient (and realized that the second I pressed enter, of course! :D), I meant the movie I Dreamed of Africa with Kim Basinger.

Hello there!
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact, there's an anecdote from my childhood. You see, back then, we only had very old moves played on our TV stations. And "Tarzan" was one of them. So, to me (back then) t was all so new, and wild. Could you imagine my surprise when I grew up an found out the "new movie" I saw as a kid was half a century old? :)
Thank you for reminding me..
Say, darling.. you're misting one out:
The Snows of Kilimanjaro (from 1952), featuring Gregory Peck, Susan Hayward, and Ava Gardner. I loved that one!

The African Queen is one of my all time favorites! Mogambo is another great African tale. I have always had an urge to go on safari, and I'm sure it was fostered by these classic films.
