Bette Davis is clearly one of the best actresses of the 20th Century. One only has to look at her body of work from the 1930's to the 1980's to see that she was versatile acting in a wide range of films from melodramas to thrillers to period pieces. She was also the kind of actress that refused to conform to Hollywood's standards and challenged ageism through her film choices. She didn't pretend that she was aging but she refused to allow Hollywood to push her out simply because she was aging. Her choices in films like What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), Dead Ringer (1964), and The Nanny (1965) showed the world her dedication and passion for her craft.
Bette didn't want to known for her beauty or personality but rather by her work. Her work as an actress meant everything to her. Roles for actresses after 40 became slimmer and slimmer but Bette did her best with her situation at the time.
