Houseboat (1958) stars Cary Grant (as Tom), Sophia Loren (as Cinzia), Martha Hyer (as Carolyn), Harry Guardino (as Angelo), and a young Paul Petersen (as David). The film begins with Tom Winters coming home after the death of his estranged wife. He is now in charge of his three children but feels utterly clueless on how to raise them. In come his sister-in-law, Carolyn (Hyer) has been longing to take her position by his side.
To make things a little more complicated we get introduced the the beautiful Sophia Loren who plays Cinzia Zaccardi, the daughter of a famous Italian conductor. Cinzia is rebelling from her father and finds herself suddenly landing a job as Tom's maid. Little does Tom know that she is clueless about cooking, cleaning, and taking care of children. Cinzia is yearning for a different life and while working for Tom isn't exactly what she is looking for, it changes all of their lives for the better.
This film is so charming. I especially love the banter between Sophia Loren and Cary Grant. This is film sweet, romantic, and even funny. There is also a teachable moment between Tom and David that you can see HERE that is so moving and inspirational. Loren is just gorgeous in this movie and Grant is his usual dashing self which makes it all the more enjoyable.
