Spending a day in the city is such a treat. There is always so much to discover and rediscover, I was lucky to do both. While my husband and I were walking towards The Met we came across the Lexington Candy Shop and decided to go in and just try it out. That's another fun thing about Manhattan, coming across things you didn't think of visiting. When that happens, if you can, I say go for it.

The Lexington Candy Shop was established in 1925 and located at 83rd and Lexington. Its a perfect place to go to for lunch, in our case breakfast, before heading over to the local museums. I've been to two mom and pop shops like this one located in Queens and Long Island and while they are really neat and have that old fashioned feel their food wasn't anything to write home about. My husband and I didn't order anything fancy but what we did have was absolutely delicious. The bread was fresh, the eggs were tasty, and the bacon was crispy, What more can a girl ask for? Oh, the prices are incredibly reasonable.

I loved it. Its super cozy, the employees were all nice, and did I tell you they still cook on a vintage stove!!?

I say it all the time. The best day to drive into the city is Sunday. If you go early you can score free parking and the plus is that there aren't those pesky large crowds that you usually end up dealing with during the rest of the week.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of my very favorite places in Manhattan to go to. I have been craving to look at art for ages and was so happy to be able to go visit again.

Being among some of my favorite artists and art is really bliss for me. Its peaceful, no large crowds, and the staff are so friendly and helpful. Another perk is that you can take photos with your phone. Many of these here were taken with my phone. I think its important to not use your flash when taking photos of 200 year old art.

I told my husband in passing that if they could just place a massive bed in the room where they had all of Monet's work and just turned of the lights, I could sleep there happily. To me, there is nothing better than having the chance to feed your mind, heart, and soul. I believe art does that.

Have you ever been to The Met? Do you have a favorite local museum where you live? Who is your favorite artist?

Movie Madness Monday: Ode To Mothers

I've missed doing my Movie Madness Monday posts. So they are back! Mother's Day is coming soon here in the States and so I thought an ode to mothers movie list would be fitting.

The 1959 version of Imitation of Life and Term of Endearment are tear jerkers for me. The selfless giving of a mother to her daughter and the unique connection between a mother and daughter are what make me love these two films to bits. Mrs. Miniver and I Remember Mama are both about tough mamas. There's no denying they depict mothers who are brave and full of self sacrifice.

I find all four of these selections to be loving examples of what being a good mother means. None of it is easy but in the end we do it all for the love and happiness of our child.

It's been a while since I have compiled a list of interesting links for you all to read. I have found quite a few really cool ones like 16 Leave it to Beaver Secrets and one about a wedding gown made from the bride's husbands parachute from WWII.

I also found the link about Marilyn's London Portraits to be exquisite and a bit haunting. I can't help but wonder how anyone could be that physically beautiful and she really was.

I hope you enjoy what I have found and let me know which links you enjoyed the most.

Vintage New York: Automats

April 21, 2016
A Vintage Nerd, Automats, Vintage New York

What is a Automat? An Automat is like a combination of a fast food cafeteria and a vending machine all in one. Unfortunately, the last one that existed in New York City closed in April 1991. Can you just imagine taking your lunch break from a busy day at the office and walking to your local Automat and putting in some coins to get your fresh, warm meal all ready for you to eat? I think this system sounds so nifty.

At the beginning Automats only accepted nickels, so you could purchase a hamburger for a nickel or bacon and eggs for two nickels. Not only were they affordable meals but the perk for customers was that they were able to see what they were going to buy. All you had to do was drop your nickel in the slot, turn the knob, lift the hinged window and there was your meal.

To me, the Automat was like a grown ups cafeteria. Proper ceramic plates, cutlery that isn't plastic, and the feel that you are eating in a nice restaurant yet you were not breaking the bank. Fast and affordable. What is not to like?

Pouring your own freshly brewed coffee into a nice ceramic mug is a rarity in our Starbucks world. The Automats were indeed something special. Now if only I could go back in time and tell my 15 year old self to get on the train and head to the Automat before it gets shut down. Darnit!
