The Real Ziegfeld Girls

After yesterday's spotlight on Ziegfeld Girls (1941) I started thinking about the girls who donned the sparkly, silk pieces of clothing and entertained thousands with their beauty.

There were hundreds of girls who became a part of the Ziegfeld Follies. Becoming a Ziegfeld Girl provided opportunities for many of them to become actresses and even marry wealthy and prominent men. I know in our modern times that sounds so archaic but if a girl comes from a poor family, becoming a Ziegfeld Girl would place her in a better position in life.

The photos of the Ziegfeld Girls displayed a sense of unabashed sexuality. They were sensual without being overtly sexual and beautiful because they are so tastefully done.

Here are some ravishingly stunning photos of the Ziegfeld Girls of yesteryear:

Aren't these photos just jaw dropping? I sometimes wonder if they enjoyed doing these photo shoots and if they were proud of the work they did later in life. There is no denying that the beauty captured by the photographer of these girls will endure time.

  1. Ah I love this post! I totally wonder things like that too because now we look at them and think wow what classic beauties. Some of these photos so well known, and such beautiful art but at the time did they feel proud? Were they excited? Did they love the outfits they got to wear? Were the photo shoots tiring? I wonder if theres any interview out there with any of them about the experiences.

  2. I love the old world sensuality. You didn't have to be naked and down right vulgar to be considered beautiful and sexy. This is classic sexy and I miss it. Beautiful and interesting post.

  3. What a marvelously glamorous post. The Follies are so much a part of different era to most peoples' eyes these days. They were sensual, yet - even in their most flamboyant costumes - never what I'd consider to be entirely risque. They had class and sass, charm and charisma and deserve to be remembered for many more generations to come.

  4. These photos are so beautiful. There's an Instagrammer, jkeith308, who posts a lot of pictures from Old Hollywood and celebrities from the early part of the century, and she'll talk about what she can find out about the people in the photos. It seems like some of them went on to have great lives, but a lot of others end up used, abused, and dead from drugs or alcohol far too young. It sounds like it could be really hard to be a pretty young thing in those days - they had so little protection from exploitation.
