Accepting yourself exactly as you are is a a concept that is good to hear about but can be challenging to learn how to follow. Why? Why is it so hard to accept and be okay with who we are? I would like to say it is a simple answer but it's not. The way we see ourselves and think about ourselves is based on our environment, our influences, the media, and our own very distinctive personalities. I like to believe that self acceptance and confidence are things we can expose ourselves too, teach ourselves, and nurture in our own minds so that we train ouriselves to think positively and not the latter.

Look here's my current situation. I am 42, Puerto Rican, 5"3", a size 12-14, and I have a physical disability. I am curvy and wear plastic on my legs and my rear is way bigger than I thought it could ever be. But you know what? This is who I am. A woman's body changes every year. Add age, culture, lifestyle, motherhood, and genes and you are going to be what you are going to be. I am not saying we cannot work to be healthier or that we shouldn't take care of ourselves because I am a huge advocate for taking care of yourself. Your physical, mental, and spiritual  health should be a number one priority. Taking care of yourself is an aspect of self love and no matter how busy we are with work, family, or life in general, we should always try and tend to ourselves. But it is also important to accept yourself as you are at any given moment.

This month I attended the Curvy Con event here in Manhattan. I wanted to treat myself to something different and also expose myself to a potentially body positive environment. I never considered myself plus size and many people have told me that I am not but I know my own body and I am aware of its roundness. I understand this is where I am with my body at the moment and I decided to attend because I wanted to give myself an opportunity to seek more acceptance of my physical changes and more confidence.

I was bedazzled when Modcloth asked to dress me for this event and wearing their clothing made me feel completly gorgeous. Between meeting some many incredible women at the Curvy Con event and dressing up with Modcloth I truly felt like I was celebrating my curves.

Self acceptance and building a healthy confidence may take time to create and build within you but meeting like minded people and wearing clothes that make you feel good are great steps to take. Thank you to Curvy Con for creating such a positive space for so many people and to Modcloth for helping me celebrate my unique beauty.

  1. Well done you! Its a bit of a shock how much our bodys change with age! but you look fabulous! Self acceptance is the talk now but having others also accept you being happy in yoyr own skin is the challenge, funny how intimidated women can get by a happy well adjusted women. What a wonderful experience curvycon would have been.

    1. Oh babes thank you so much!!!! It is nuts how much we change year by year. Its like an ongoing cycle of self acceptance we must go through if not we can so easily lose ourselves in the unhappiness of what we once were instead of accepting and working with what we have right now. Thank you for the comment!! xox
