Special Cinema Spotlight: Documentary: Shirley Temple: The Biggest Little Star

After the passing of Shirley Temple-Black early last year I really, really wanted to watch a documentary on her life. I Immediately put this particular one on my Netflix queue and it has little stayed there for the entire year! I simply gave up (it was on the long list) and asked Santa for a copy and I am so glad that I was finally able to watch it.

I have always been a fan of Shirley's and especially found the films that she did as a child be sort of magical. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary but was disappointed that it didn't begin with, "Shirley Temple was born..." I learned nothing about her life prior to acting as this documentary focused solely on her career that started out with acting and ended up with politics.

I definitely learned more about her life as an actress and how much politics meant to her during her adult years. I can honestly say that she was one phenomenal woman.

If you are a fan of Shirley's like I am, I say watch this documentary. If not, you can also try reading, Child Star: An Autobiography.

Mrs. Temple-Black was many things during her 85 years of life. She was a Hollywood icon, a dancer, singer, a public servant, a diplomat, a wife, a mother, and a grandmother. I look at her life in amazement because she accomplished so much.

I plan on dedicating a few posts on Shirley and her films but I wanted to ask you first, what are your favorite Shirley Temple films?

  1. Cool! Every once in a while PBS would show Shirley's bio. There was a made for TV movie on Shirley's life http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0233274/ As much as I liked Shirley's movies when she was a child. I really enjoyed Shirley's movies when she was a teenager/young adult. My favorites are Miss Annie Rooney, I'll Be Seeing You, Since You Went Away, Kiss and Tell and The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer.

  4. Shirley is a gem.
She shine from the screen and was my childhood hero. Back when I was a kid, our stations played "black and white" film a lot. To me, those were "modern" and I, as a kid, was not aware how old they are. Shirley, as Little Princess.. she was magnificent. I ahve seen that film EVERY TIME it was on the TV. :)
