Pop Culture Tuesdays: Supernatural: Always Keep Fighting

Supernatural is one of those shows that I would have passed over if not for the encouragement of my older brother. We tend to encourage one another to watch certain shows or films that the other may overlook. Once I started I didn't look back.  Supernatural is a blend of mystery, adventure, fantasy, drama, comedy....goodness you name it and it has it. It follows the lives of two brothers, Dean and Sam, who are hunters. Hunters of what you may ask. Hunters of monsters. Sounds silly but the writing is incredible. I am a sucker for good writing and this show has it.

The show has the occasionally dash of flashing to the past so I wouldn't say it has anything to do with vintage at all but it does have a massive fan base. The fans, like myself, are loyal to the show because you can sense that it is made with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. Nothing better for a fan of  good story than to know the entire cast and crew gives their all to the show.

This is where if one has a good and positive message to share they can because they have such a loyal and massive following. The actor who plays Sam Winchester, Jared Padalecki, recently shared his battle with depression. Mental Illness and depression thankfully are becoming less and less of a taboo subject to talk about but it still has a ways to go. Jared then created a way to help a variety of support groups by selling t-shirt that said his motto, "Always Keep Fighting". The first sale went so well that he then teamed up with fellow "brother" Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) to sell more merchandise to continue to get the message across that no matter how deep the depression gets to always keep fighting.

I don't normally support causes so easily but I felt inspired not only by the actors candidness, not only because I am a genuine fan of the show, but because I know so many who suffer from mental illness and I want to show my support to them and others like them. Instead of a t-shirt I purchased a canvas tote bag and now I get to share both my love for Supernatural and my hope that those suffering can always keep fighting.

I can't help but love films and shows that have good fighting the bad. This show plays out that theme in every episode. Now Jared is inspiring those suffering the consequences of mental illness by inspiring them to keep fighting the good fight.

  1. I didn't know about the campaign, that's really awesome. There's so much stigma against mental illness that it often keeps people from seeking help; any kind of public awareness campaign can only be a good thing.
I did love that show. I didn't start watching it until several seasons in, and I just devoured it. All the eye candy definitely played a part, but the stories were also really great. I think it's gotten a little too repetitive in recent seasons, though.
