It was an exciting time in U. S. history and households nationwide were celebrating such a huge step for mankind. They held celebrations in their homes and in their neighborhoods with special spreads of food and drinks all in honor of the Apollo 11 landing.
These recipes are some of the dishes made during an Apollo 11 traditional cocktail party.
The Moonwalk:
Bartender Joe Gilmore invented the original cocktail recipe and was the first drink
served toe the Apollo 11 crew when they returned to Earth.
1 part Grapefruit Juice
1 part Orange Curacao
1 dash Rose Water
2 parts Sparkling white wine (or Vodka)
If using sparkling wine, shake all the other ingredients with ice first. Strain into a flute glass and top with sparkling wine. If using vodka, shake all the ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
The Vodka Gimlet:
1 ½ oz. Vodka
¾ oz. Lime juice
3-4 lime slices
Pour vodka and lime juice into mixing glass.
Shake and strain into martini glass. Add 3-4 slices of lime.
Shrimp-Filled Mushrooms
1 lb. mushrooms (large caps)
Two – 4 ½ oz. cans shrimp finely chopped
½ cup minced celery (about 2 stalks)
½ lb. very lean pork, finely ground
½ tsp. salt
Dash of pepper
1/3 cup cooking light oil
2 tbsp. soy sauce
1-cup chicken broth
Wash mushrooms and remove stems. Mix shrimp, celery, pork, salt and pepper. Pile mixture generously into mushroom caps. Heat oil, soy sauce, and chicken broth in large heavy skillet over medium heat, or use electric fry pan. Place mushrooms in skillet, filled side up. Cover and cook 30 minutes, until pork is thoroughly done.
Classic French Onion Dip
1 envelope Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix
16 ounces sour cream
Mix together, chill if desired. If time allows, let sit for 30 minutes to an hour in the fridge before serving.
