Creating Chiller Theater Memories

Last October my family and I attended Chiller Theater Expo in New Jersey as we often do. We love making it a day trip with the kids. We have been going since 2006 and it never disappoints. To have the chance to meet and chat with stars of yesterday and today is a super neat.

We met Dee Wallace and Henry Thomas from E.T. (1982), took a photo with the card used in Halloween (1978), Sara Karloff (Boris Karloff's only child), Nick Castle (original Michael Meyers), and the great Tom Atkins (Night of the Creeps (1986) and Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982).

Nick Castle asked to take a photo with my youngest because he actually dressed up as Michael Meyers for   Halloween. He loved the photos we took of him in the costume. We also encountered the best cosplayer who dressed up as Fluffy from a segment in Creepshow (1982). It was amazing.  Events like these are super fun and for the tv/movie aficionados.

Best Chiller Theater Experience Yet

This year we attended the Chiller Theater Expo in Parsippany, New Jersey in April and for the first time we made it into a mini weekend trip. Our children love hotels and the pool. After we had some downtime fun we explored the expo and set our sites on who we would like to meet.

I heard some of the original cast of West Side Story (1961) were going to be there and I knew that is where I had to stop by first. I cannot tell you what a joy it was to meet and be able to speak to these iconic performers. West Side Story (1961) is a special film for me because it was the first time I saw a Puerto Rican person in a big film. I was able to meet David Bean (Tiger), Russ Tamblyn (Riff), Tony Mordente (Action), and Eddie Verso (Juan).

unexpectedly spent some special time with both David Bean and Tony Mordente who are Broadway legends. We chatted about life, the film, the reimagining of the film, family, and even personal philosophies. They were both so lovely and gracious to spend that time talking to me. I still cannot believe this happened to me and my daughter actually captured some of our conversations on video so I can look over those magical moments over and over.

We also met the likes of Lea Thompson, Burton Gilliam, Jamie Farr, and one of the writers of Boris Karloff: The Man Behind the Monster (1921), Ron MacCloskey. Everyone was so nice and warm. We usually can't get to everyone we want to meet because there are also vendors selling vintage movie goods, horror movie products, and movie collectibles. We also have a good time walking around and taking in all the different things that this expo has to offer. Our kids have been going since they were little and I take particular joy in sharing my love and passion for film with them.

I will leave you with a funny anecdote that Jamie Farr who played the iconic role of Corporal Klinger in M*A*S*H and as the Sheik in The Cannonball Run movies, shared with my husband and I. My husband loves The Cannonball Run movies and after he told Mr. Farr about how much he enjoyed the films Mr. Farr said, " during the filming of Cannonball Run there wasn't anyone that wasn't drinking on that set because you know, Dean Martin was there."

Stepping Out of Our Norm @Chiller

Around 2006-2007 my husband and I attended our first Chiller Theater Convention. We didn't know what we were getting into at first. After walking around a bit we ended up meeting the cast of A Christmas Story (1983) who signed a leg lamp for us, I got a smooch on my cheek from Peter Criss (Katman from Kiss), and I chatted with Melody Anderson (Flash Gordon) about education and kids (She is now a social worker). I didn't realize that this convention of past and present actors, musicians, etc would bring such delight to either of us.

After our first Chiller we would try every year to attend one. Both my husband and I are big movie, tv, and music aficionados. Music and movies played a huge part in our childhood and in our generation. For a few years we attended with my brother and his family. My brother and I are very different in many ways but the one big thing we have in common is our love for the visual medium of film and television. This past October my family and I attended our first Chiller without my brother because he relocated to another state. It was bittersweet but it was still fun to share with our children and show them little glimpses into our own childhoods.

In ode to The Creature from the Black Lagoon's (1954) 65th Anniversary I wore a dress from Unique Vintage's special line of Universal Studios Monsters inspired clothing. I absolutely love this style of dress and it was a Mother's Day gift from my husband. I felt like a vintage dream in this dress and I got so many compliments from people at the convention. There is no better feeling then when you are wear a style you love and are comfortable in.

My family and I had the best time talking to all sorts of interesting people and we even got in some vintage shopping from the vendors there. Afterwards I was able to meet Ann Robinson who starred in the original War of the Worlds (1953), tell Kristy McNichol how much her film Just the Way You Are (1984) meant to me (her character wore a leg brace), share with Hayley Mills how much our family loves her films, and talk art with the great Frank Romano who was the head artist for the Ben Cooper costume company.

I think its so important to step out of your norm and do something different and attending Chiller Theater Conventions is just that for us. We get to meet and talk with people who we have long admired their work and have good fun with our children too. What do you like to do that is a little out of your norm?

Springtime at Chiller

About once or twice a year I attend an event called Chiller Theater usually with my husband and my brother and his girlfriend. My brother and I share a bond of our love of film and television so this event is the one thing we make sure to do together if we can. The event is basically an opportunity and meet and greet actors and the like from yesteryear and now. You get a blend of retired performers to very popular actors like the cast of Sons of Anarchy.

Typically I wear vintage to these events but this year I decided to wear one of my eShakti dresses paired with my new Boden cardigan. I think it is one of my favorite outfits as the dress was cotton. It was easy to wear and easy to move around in as I chased after my children. I paired it with my vintage moonglow, vintage yellow stud earrings, Doctor Who brooch, and yellow headband. If you haven't already you can watch my little impromptu video showing how I put together my outfit for this event HERE.

There were so many cool things for kids to see like this display of the Little Shop of Horrors life size puppet. They allowed the children to take photos with them and we met some puppeteers and artists who worked for Jim Henson. One puppeteer even did a little show them. Everyone was so nice. Don't you just love Audrey!?

Being the cinephile that I am I was eager to meet James Darrin (Gidget) and William Katt (The Greatest American Hero) and I did! I have to admit I was nervous. I usually am pretty cool about these things but I was chatting up with Moondoggie himself...swoon! William Katt is not only known for being a superhero in the 80's but also being the star of Pippin on Broadway. I always love listening to him sing Corner of the Sky on YouTube. It makes my heart sore. It was out of this world to tell him that in person.

My brother and I grew up watching some interesting and fun shows in the 70's and 80's and one of the was Land of the Lost. We met some of the cast and that was heaps of fun.

Spending The Afternoon at Chiller

April 27, 2014
A Vintage Nerd

Today I spent the rare day out without the kiddies and with my husband, brother, and his partner attending the Chiller Theater Expo. It becoming a yearly tradition for the four of us to get together and attend this fun event. The Chiller Expo is a place where you can meet actors and celebrities of yesteryear and of today. If you are a fan of television and film then this is a must see event.

This Chiller Theater event is my fourth. The first was in 2006 and the second you can read about HERE (in my old blog) and HERE.

What I like about attending this event is that I get a chance to meet tv/film actors from classic tv shows and films that I love and also some from today. I love being able to tell them thank you for what they have done artistically and it is such a pleasure to be able to chat with them.

Before I share with you who I met, I want to share what I wore. I wore a cotton 1950's dress that has little white hearts (they look like dots from afar) all over and a beautiful floral design at the bottom. I paired it up with a cardigan from Old Navy, a 1950's white wicker purse, and a bracelet I purchased in an Antique Mall. I wore my favorite shade of lipstick, Snow Peach (a shade of coral), and painted my nails with OPI's Brazil Collection, a shade called "Where Did Suzi-Man Go?"

This Chiller I really wanted to meet Bob McGrath who played the character of Bob on Sesame Street. If you don't know by now, I am a huge Sesame Street fan. Hello. aren't you too old for this? I know you must be asking in your head, but really as a child who didn't grow up with a lot of money or with cable or trips to Disney, Sesame Street (thank you PBS!) became that special magical place to go to. Plus I learned a lot.

Now my children are fans and well, I want to thank Bob for bringing such joy into my life. He is getting older so I knew I had to take the chance to meet him. I was giddy and felt like a happy five year old. He was wonderful and everything I imagined. I actually feel blessed to have met him.

Next on my list was to meet Paul Peterson. You may remember him from The Donna Reed Show but he was also cast as Cary Grant's son in Houseboat. I really wanted to ask him about working with Cary and he was so kind to answer my question. He told me he was friends with him until the end of Cary's life (1986) and that Cary told him one time that he never forgot that he was Archie Leach. That remembering that and not forgetting who he really was kept him grounded. If you didn't know, Cary's real name was Archibald Leach.

The last person I took a photo with was Gil Birmingham who is known for playing the role of Billy Black in The Twilight films. Ladies, this man is 60 years old and dare I say dreamy with a capital D. A very handsome man in person.

We met a few others and I almost went to meet Shirley Jones and Priscilla Presley but I didn't feel comfortable with the amount they were charging or the way they presented themselves. We walked around and spoke to a few other folks and my brother got to meet Norman Reedus from The Walking Dead. That line was bonkers and my legs couldn't take it so I did my best and still had a blast.

I have to say I love dressing up when I go to this event. So many of the guests that are there notice and appreciate a lady wearing vintage and I appreciate that as well. I love to show others that a woman can look attractive, beautiful, desirable, and dare I say sexy-without showing everything she has. Grandma raised me well!

If you ever get a chance to attend this event or other events like it, I say do it!

A Childhood Dream Come True

October 29, 2013
A Vintage Nerd Vintage Blog Vintage Fashion Retro Fashion 1950s Dress Moonglow Bracelets The Outsiders Chiller Theater Vintage Life

The Outsiders is one of my favorite books. It is in my top five and even though it is for young adult readers, I find the message it speaks transcends age and time.

It was published in 1967 and set  by a then teen aged girl named S.E. Hinton. S. E. began writing the book when she was fifteen and wrote most of it when she was sixteen. It wasn't until she was eighteen that the book was published. I remember learning that the author of The Outsiders was a teen when she wrote and had her book published and teenage me thought, well if she can do it then I can too. I still think I can. I have so many unfinished transcripts..one day. one day...

The book follows the lives of Pony Curtis and his two brothers as well as the members of the greasers gang he is in. Set in 1965, you get to have a glimpse on the lives of those who live on the wrong side of the tracks as well as the right side. And you learn that as one character says, "It's hard all over".

When I learned that Chiller Theatre Expo was going to have two of the stars of the film version of The Outsiders (1983),  Ralph Macchio (Johnny) and C. Thomas Howell (Ponyboy)at their event, I knew I had to go. I have been to conventions before and although I am  not a fan girl type, I am a passionate person when it comes to film/tv/books. See..that's just the nerd in me.

Last year I attended with my husband, brother, and sister in law and we has a blast. You can take a peak at who I met here.

Of course I had to dress up again  for this event. I purchased this dress from The Greedy Seagull over the summer and have been waiting patiently to wear it in the fall. Does this dress scream Fall or what?

This dress is one of my favorites and now I want a slew of them with zippers in the front and large pockets on each side! My cardigan was purchased at Target for $17.99, my jewelry purchased via Etsy (the cat sweater clip is my new pride and joy), my flower clips from Claire's Accessories, and lastly my 1950's grey handbag was from Easy.

My copy of The Outsiders was given to me my freshman year of HS by a senior. This copy is not a first edition as they are hard to come by but it is a 1987 hardcover 20th Anniversary edition, with the photos of the cast from the film on the cover.

Most people don't want their books autographed and I am not big on autographs (I sorta think everyone is famous in their own way) but I felt that meeting them and having them put their names in my book would just make my book more special to me and it did! Oh it did! Like I said earlier I am not a fan girl but I was shaking when I met both of them. They are a part of my childhood. I remember watching the film and hanging my poster of the group of guys from the film on my bedroom wall and I remember feeling connected to the character of Ponyboy Curtis.

Meeting them was a special, special moment.

Others were asking them to sign dvds and posters but I was the only one asking them to sign a book. They both loved my copy to bits and neither had seen that specific copy before. It was so neat to be able to tell them how special it was to meet them. It....was....awesome!

Honorable mentions to two fantastic and utterly inspirational people I met that day as well goes to Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes) and Larry Storch (1960s show called F Troop) were both such gentlemen. I adored them both. They loved being there and got to chat with Milo a bit and Larry was just so sweet. He is ninety now and still has his whits about him. It was so nice to meet someone from years gone by, as you can imagine.
