Ingrid Bergman In Her Own Words

Ingrid Bergman's time spent in Hollywood left a mark on the silver screen that is indelible. She is considered one of the best in movie history but what do we really know about her? I only knew the basics. I knew that she was Swedish, made great movies with people like Cary Grant, and that her daughter was Isabelle Rossellini. There, thats it. That was until I watched, Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words.

It was eye opening in so many ways. The film includes interviews with her children, which I find to be treasures. First hand view of famous people are always interesting to me. It also includes a voice over of things she wrote down and shared herself. This documentary really hits all the marks. Its has layers yet it shares her story in a linear fashion.

I was captivated by this documentary because they were using many tools to tell her story. It wasn't just a looking back at her past but including photos, first hand interviews, her own video recordings of her private life, and the voice over that was done beautifully by Alicia Vikander.

What I enjoyed the most was learning about a girl from Sweden who had big dreams and depite suffering the losses of her parents at a young age, she made them all come true. What I didn't enjoy was learning how her work as an actresses superseded her role as a mother. She spent very little time with her children and her adult children spoke candidly about their yearning for her. It was heart breaking to hear one of them say that when she was around they couldn't get enough of her. I do feel that she had a great love for her children and when she was with them she will fully committed to them. But their is no denying that her first love was her craft.

If you want to learn more about Ingrid Bergman and want to watch a refreshing take on documentary style film making, I highly recommend viewing this.
