Merry Catmas

Like many of you, I have been thinking about what I am grateful for during this holiday season. I thought of how how grateful I am that I made it through some bad health issues in the beginning of the year, our home, my husband, and the children. So many simple yet important things I'm grateful for.

I've also been thinking about Sophie, our cat who we lost this June. Ironically I wasn't a cat person but she won my heart, she won all our hearts. After we lost her I decided that I wouldn't think of adopting again until I really felt ready. The summer was quiet without her, even with three little kids running around the house all day long. There was a silence I couldn't quite explain.

Then I did something I didn't expect that I would do. I found myself getting in contact with the hospital where Sophie was a patient, I found out that there were pair of siblings that were available for adoption and something inside of me told me that I would have to meet them.

We visited them a few times before adoption but I knew the moment I met Audie and Millie that they were meant to be mine. We officially adopted them this September and although there were some bumps in the road, we are all finally settled in now as a family of seven!

Now they are six months old and every day I fall more in love with them and for that I am grateful. While nothing could ever replace Sophie, Audie and Millie have made a wonderful addition to our family. Making this an extra special Merry Catmas.

So, happy Christmas to you all. Here's hoping the holidays bring you continued joy and many blessings.

'Tis the season of decorating Christmas trees, hanging mistletoe, and finding the perfect gift to give to those you love. I was going through some old posts of mine and to my surprise I realized that I haven't done a gift guide since 2014! Oh boy, I knew I had to rectify that immediately and get back on the bandwagon with a AVN Gift Guide for 2017.

Here are some classic gifts that would make anyone who loves vintage or nostalgia go ga-ga:

A Vintage Nerd Book Club: The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia

December 17, 2017
A Vintage Nerd, Twilight Book Review, The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia, Rod Serling Book

"You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension - a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into the Twilight Zone." Rod Serling

The Twilight Zone was ahead of its time with storylines involving the concept of life on other planets, other dimensions, and time travel to name a few. The stories in the episodes really put strong and possibly controversial topics right in front of our faces. The episode, "Number 12 Looks Just Like You" (1964) talks about cloning, individuality, and the idea of being unique. In the episode, "From Agnes-With Love" (1964), a scientist falls in love with a computer, much like we all love our iPhones so much these days. Or one of the episodes that still puts chills down my spine, "The Midnight Sun"(1961) where you think everyone is dying of heat because the sun is moving closer only to find out that everyone on the planet is actually freezing to death because the sun is moving away from the earth.

Pick any episode from the five seasons that the original Twilight Zone (1959-1964) series first aired and you will find yourself enlightened, shocked, bewildered, and even frightened (Night Call). Rod Serling, the creator and main writer of the series, delivered one thought provoking episode after another. For those of you who have seen the show and have your favorite episodes, imagine if you could learn more about them.

The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia by Steven Jay Rubin is in my eyes the ultimate guidebook for Twilight Zone fans. It literally covers everything from A to Z. All of the episodes are included. the actors in them as well as never-before-seen images, interviews, and the behind the scenes. You get to relive each episode and learn about everyone who was a part in making it. This book is really something special.

If you love The Twilight Zone as much as I do, I highly recommend grabbing this book at your local book store. When you do-grab a chair, get comfy in front of your t.v., take your copy of The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia and put on the first episode (Where is Everybody). And prepare yourself...

"You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead - your next stop, the Twilight Zone!"

Holiday Ruffles

December 12, 2017

I love when I see vintage fashion pop up in mainstream fashion. I know some don't appreciate it but after so many years of wearing pure vintage and struggling to find pieces that are a part of my style, I appreciate some companies bringing some vintage flair back into today's fashion. Although I feel that nothing compares with wearing and owning vintage pieces as I still prefer vintage over anything else. But I am excited that companies like Boden, Modcloth, Unique Vintage, and J. Crew are creating pieces with a vintage, classic flair.

The holidays are coming up so quickly and the days are being filled with fun family holiday themed outings. I was out and about with my family on one of our playdates with some good friends of ours to see the movie, "The Star" with the children and I decided to wear my new festive inspired ruffle blouse by J.Crew. Ruffled blouses have been making a come back in the past few years and no wonder because they they were so popular for so many years especially in the 1960's to the early 1980's. I remember my mother used to wear silk ruffle blouses with slacks back in 1983 and she was one stylish lady.

Honestly I have always been hesitant to purchase a ruffled blouse-vintage or vintage inspired-only because of my bust size. I always thought that it would just make me look even bigger than I was and that it would make feel uncomfortable. But I am happy to say that I was wrong. Not only was this top by J.Crew completely comfortable but I didn't feel like I was bustier than I was. I paired it up with my favorite Boden jeans that are a vintage cut with my "new-to-me" thrifted Kelly Green cross body purse and a knitted beret.

It just goes to show you that creating a classic vintage inspired look doesn't have to be as hard as we sometimes feel it is. Choosing how to create a vintage look that all your own whether its pure vintage, retro, or vintage inspired can be a daunting task because there is so much out there to choose from. I think sometimes less is more and with that you can create a vintage look that is all yours.

Fall in Style with a Houndstooth Cape

December 09, 2017

Oh how quickly the fall has come and gone here in New York. I'm so glad that my children and I got one more chance to play with the leaves before the snow came. My children wanted to join along too and I'm happy to let them. That way this busy vintage mom can keep an eye on them and get some photos in for my blog. Its a happy medium I have finally struck with my private life and blog life and everyone wins in the end.

This Fall afternoon out I wore that cape I thrifted and shared on my Instagram . It was brand new with tags and being sold for 12.99, but it was Monday and they had special sales that day so I actually paid 9.27 for it. It was originally priced at 89.00 so it was a mega score plus its a cape and its houndstooth. This is probably one of my favorite pieces in my closet right now. This paired with my 1960's styled Greek fisherman's cap and some loop earrings and I was all decked out in 1960's style for the duration of my day. That easy! They do say less is more!

The Fall is my very favorite season and sadly it has come and gone too quickly. But I'm grateful that at least we got to play in the leaves a bit before it ended. Now we have snow and bulky sweaters to look forward to! What is your favorite season?

Avid Readers Club Fashion

Okay, I have to tell you the moment I saw this sweatshirt, the nerd girl in me had to have it. I have never shopped with Joanie Clothing before this time but I have been admiring their pieces for a while now because they tick off two important musts fashion-wise for me; vintage inspired and comfort.

I'm just not the type of girl to wear clothing just because it looks good or very, very uncomfortable. I think its hard enough to be a women than to add to it and wear something you aren't comfortable with. This ended up being my favorite outfit so far for this fall season. I felt comfortable and pretty all at once and my special sweatshirt shouted out something I hold dear to my heart.

I had so much fun putting this outfit together and the best bit was having my ten year old daughter taking my photos. I think she did a pretty good job, didn't she?
