Vintage New York: 1946 Todd Webb Photographs

The city that never sleeps. It's true to some extent or at least perhaps compared to smaller towns or to other cities, New York City always has the ON button switched to it. The neat thing about a city though is that because its always so busy and so many people coming in and out that there are always changes happening at a more rapid rate compared to a smaller area.

Todd Webb was an American photographer that photographed mainly architecture and every day life. These photos are a part of a collection of 15 photos taken when he was 40 years old.

I love seeing what New York City was like years ago. Goodness so many things have changed through the years like the piers where there used to be trading and cargo ships but today that is no longer in use.

Here are a few of Todd Webb's photos of New York City in 1946:

Aren't these amazing! He was such a talented photographer. I always enjoy looking at people in their everyday lives from the past, don't you? Which one did you like best?

  1. Looking at these images, I started thinking: I'd go window-shopping.. and I love the window with hats inside.
I'd go in there in no time - and shop for the hat from the window (just no idea HOW to pick just one) :)

  3. That hat shop, oh my word, that hat shop!!! Swoon - what I wouldn't give to go back in time and hand my whole pay cheque over to them! :D

Seriously though, these are gorgeous photos that do a sensational job of capturing the true soul of the era they hail from. I've always adored Todd Webb's work and really enjoyed seeing this roundup of some of his loveliest images here today. Thank you for sharing them with us, sweet gal.

  4. Wow, I absolutely love all these photos! Hi Daffny! Warm greetings from Montreal, Canada. I made mention on my blog post today that my favourite actor is Sidney Poitier, and Jessica commented on this post and asked me if I knew you and/or your blog, that you also like this actor, so I decided to look you up via the name of your blog in Google. Glad I found you, and I appreciate Jessica telling me about your blog. I absolutely love vintage! :)
