Sharing My Love of The Twilight Zone

When you become a parent, there are so many things you can share with your children. You can share the lessons that you already learned, you can share your belief system, you can share new experiences together, and you can share your passions with them. There are so many wonderful things I love sharing with my children but during this pandemic I thought long and hard of something I could share with them that they could learn from and remember when they are older.

Starting this January I decided to share with them my love of the classic tv series The Twilight Zone (1959-1964). We already introduced a few episodes to them over the years but I decided that we should start from the beginning with season one and watch it together. I admit there were a few episodes I never saw before so I was keen on experiencing this with them for that reason and so many more. We started with season 1 and every day after school we pick two episodes randomly and watch them.

Afterwards I encourage a discussion and ask them if they liked it, how did it make them feel, and what were their thoughts about it. They usually ask about the actors and wonder who they were. Today we started with season 3 and saw Death-Head Revisited  (episode 9: aired November 10, 1961) and The Midnight Sun (episode 10: aired November 17, 1961). The Midnight Sun really stirred them up and they were wowed by the shift in the story. It's so fun to watch them react to this show. Rod Serling was an extraordinary story teller.

I feel lucky that my children are open to experience different things especially an old black and white tv show like The Twilight Zone.  And I'm grateful that I can share my passions with them.

Have you shared any classic tv shows that you love with a friend or a loved one?

  2. I adore The Twilight Zone as well. I actually just got a sweater featuring elements from it.

As Mim mentioned, I adore The Prisoner as well! It is VERY bizarre, and one of the classic British shows my dad introduced to me, along side Doctor Who and The Avengers. While there were many seasons of The Avengers, Diana Rigg's seasons are the very best.

Often I feel like my recommendations to friends fall on deaf ears. I like things that are too bizarre or too difficult to track down.

    2. Yes! I adore The Avengers too. Such a great show.

Thinking about it, Sapphire And Steel would be good for a lover of The Twilight Zone. Not many episodes were made, it was a 70s British show about a couple of elements sent to correct weak spots in time, where weird things were going on.
