5 Boris Karloff Film Recommendations

October 22, 2023
Vintage Nerd, Boris Karloff Films, Classic Film Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Frankenstein, Universal Monsters

Boris Karloff was and will always be a horror icon. He swept us all off our feet with his rendition of Frankenstein (1931). Although Karloff started acting in films in 1919, it was his flawless depiction of a misunderstood creature that helped him make his mark on Hollywood. Born as William Henry Pratt in England to a Anglo-Indian father and a English mother on November 23, 1887. It wasn't until 1911 when he started to work in the theater when he decided to take the stage name of Boris Karloff.

Every role Karloff undertook with passion and dedication. Many of his roles required the use of stage makeup. The makeup artists of the time had the task of creating monsters that Karloff would embrace and dedicate himself fully to. It is said that the makeup process for his role in The Mummy (1932) would began at 11 a.m., with the makeup artist Jack Pierce applying cottoncollodion and spirit gum to his face; clay to his hair; and wrapping him in linen bandages treated with acid and burnt in an oven, finishing the job at 7 p.m. Karloff finished his scenes at 2 a.m., and another two hours were spent removing the make-up. Karloff found the removal of gum from his face painful, and overall found the day "the most trying ordeal I [had] ever endured".

Karloff acting in films from 1919-1968, on television from 1938-1968, and also performing on stage from 1928-1961. He acted in thirteen episodes of the "Starring Boris Karloff" anthology TV/ radio series in 1949: this show was broadcast as both a TV show and a radio show simultaneously. He hosted many anthology shows including on called Thriller (1960-1962). And let's forget his narration of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas'' 1966) and his voice work as the Grinch.

Karloff gifted the world with his talents and characters which were always unique and unforgettable. Here are a five Boris Karloff film recommendations to get you acquainted with his work. I highly recommend delving into more of his films when you get the chance. You won't be disappointed.

5 Vincent Price Film Recommendations

October 27, 2022
A Vintage Nerd, Vincent Price, Old Hollywood Stars, Vincent Price Movies, Classic Horror Movies

Vincent Price was many things in his lifetime. He was an actor, a horror movie icon, an art historian, a avid art collector, a prolific gourmet cook, a loyal friend, and a dedicated family man. He acted in films, on tv, performed in theater, and lent his unique voice to radio programs. Price was a multitalented man but is mainly known in the mainstream for the spooky films that he starred in.

In every role Price played you know that you are getting a passionate and professional performance. Price was that way in everything he did in his life. He studied art at Yale University which lead him to pursue art collecting. In 1965 he published his first cookbook called A Treasury of Great Recipes. He would venture into more art collecting and cookbooks as the years went on while he continued to lend his talents as an actor. He also used his ominous voice in audiobooks and voiceover work. You may also remember his iconic rap in Michael Jackson's song Thriller in 1982.

Price started out as a character actor in the 1930's and eventually established himself in Laura (1944) played the role of Shelby Carpenter. His first venture into the horror genre was in the Boris Karloff film Tower of London (1939). He really made his mark in horror films from the 1950's on. He played the bad guy many times in horror films but he only played a monster once in The Monster Club (1981) as a vampire named Eramus.

There is no denying that Vincent Price was a renaissance man who lived his life doing all of the things he loved but it is in the horror genre where he left his biggest mark in cinema. I highly recommend trying to get your hands on one of his biorgaphies or his cookbooks to learn more about him. If you want a small taste of Vincent Price's work as an actor here are five film recommendations that I will guarantee you will enjoy especially during this spooky season.

5 Natalie Wood Film Recommendations

September 26, 2022

A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Natalie Wood, Natalie Wood Film Recommendations, Classic Movie Blog

Natalie Wood had a career in acting that spanned from childhood to the teens years and through adulthood. Not many can claim a career that survived and thrived from all the stages of their life. Although Natalie tragically passed in 1981, her movies have stayed with us and have become staples to most classic film fans.

Natalie started acting in small roles at the age of five in films like The Moon is Down (1943) and Happy Land (1943). Her biggest roles during her childhood were in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947) and Miracle of 34th Street (1947) when she was just nine years old. She muddled through some forgettable roles until she finally found a role that could break her out into more mature roles.  That role was in the iconic Rebel Without a Cause (1955) starring alongside James Dean and Sal Mineo. From that point on she would land the biggest roles of her life in the 1960's when she was in her twenties. She took some time off in the 1970's to raise her children and her comeback role was in Brainstorm (1983). Brainstorm was released two years after her passing but it was a film she hoped would bring her back doing what she loved.

These Natalie Wood film recommendations are just a few of the films that shined the brightest. She made many others that are just as wonderful as these but if you are just delving into Natalie Wood's films these are a good place to start.

5 Bette Davis Film Recommendations

August 21, 2022

A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Classic Movie Blog, Bette Davis Movies, Classic Film Recommendations, Bette Davis, Old Hollywood Movie Stars

Bette Davis is clearly one of the best actresses of the 20th Century. One only has to look at her body of work from the 1930's to the 1980's to see that she was versatile acting in a wide range of films from melodramas to thrillers to period pieces. She was also the kind of actress that refused to conform to Hollywood's standards and challenged ageism through her film choices. She didn't pretend that she was aging but she refused to allow Hollywood to push her out simply because she was aging. Her choices in films like What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), Dead Ringer (1964), and The Nanny (1965) showed the world her dedication and passion for her craft.

Bette didn't want to known for her beauty or personality but rather by her work. Her work as an actress meant everything to her. Roles for actresses after 40 became slimmer and slimmer but Bette did her best with her situation at the time. Through her performances she showed that aging actresses still had the ability and range to deliver outstanding work in film.

These five film recommendations are just a snippet of what Bette Davis was capable of as an actress. They will leave you feeling heartbroken, challenged, frightened, overwhelmed, and moved. Bette knew how to make you feel it all.

Have you seen any of these film recommendations? What Bette Davis films have you enjoyed?

5 Catherine Deneuve Film Recommendations

April 25, 2022

A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, 5 Catherine Deneuve Film Recommendations, Classic Film Blog, Catherine Deneuve Movies, Old Hollywood Blog

When I first saw Catherine Deneuve in a film I thought she was the most ethereal actress I have ever seen. Deneuve is extremely beautiful but she is also a breathtaking actress. Deneuve has acted in films that stay with you for days to come and films that make you want to revisit them again and again.

Here are my five favorite Catherine Deneuve films. Many of her films are in her native language of French but they are worth watching with subtitles in case you don't know French. I find a lot is lost when you watch a film or television show that is dubbed.

These five film recommendations will leave you saddened, moved, bewildered, inspired, and haunted. Have you ever watched any of these films? What foreign language films do you prefer to watch?
