Barbie 1960's Hair Flair 50th Anniversary

One of the most important accessories for a girl in the 1960's was her hairstyle. It was her statement piece above all other pieces. It set the tone to her personal style whether she was a hippie or a more conservation kind of girl. Hair was everything. Usually the bigger and the more creative it was, the better the hairstyle.

In 1967, Barbie came out with a set of hair pieces, wigs, and other accessories so that any little girl could dress up their doll in a super groovy fashion. This year is the 50th Anniversary of this set called Flair Hair. In my research I have found conflicting information as to whether the set came with a doll or just the hair accessories. But one thing is for sure, this anniversary set is must have for any Barbie fan or just anyone who loves the 1960's.

When I saw that they were reissuing the Barbie Hair Flair I knew I had to snag it up. It's taking a lot for me not to open it but because its such a great collector's piece I won't. It comes with one Barbie doll in a pretty 1960's mod dress. She's wearing a pair of dangle earrings that are perfectly groovy and coordinating pink shoes. It also comes with two wigs and two hair pieces that I wish came in my color and size. It's just all too cute for words. Barbie really has a way to make a girl of any age happy.

Crazy Cat Lady Fashion

June was still bearable weather wise here in New York and I took full advantage of it. I went on an outing to the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan with my children I decided to wear a Mother's Day dress I received from my husband.

The dress is called the Darlene in Crazy Cat Lady Print by Bernie Dexter. It has Peter Pan collars, a tie, short sleeves, pockets, and a zipper in the front. It's made of cotton so it is wonderful to wear in any weather, especially the summer. The dress is covered with adorable kitty cats getting invovled in all sorts of mischief and I love it.

I wore it also as a remembrance to my Sophie. I never thought I would ever be a cat person but 15 years ago I adopted a black kitty that I named Sophie. My husband and I got her one month after we started dating so in many ways she was our first child.  She was a huge part of our lives, of my life. She knew me when I was a teacher, when my husband and I were dating, and then married. She came to live with me in my first apartment then into my first house. I watched her take her first steps up a flight of stairs in our new home. She experienced becoming a big sister three times in four years. She really was not happy about that but eventually she came to adore her siblings. She would lay on my stomach and I would feel her purr. She was the prettiest cat I had ever seen. So patient, loving, kind, playful yet gentle, and always took the time to be with her mama.

We lost Sophie this summer. I thought on this outing not only could I wear my Mother's Day gift but also honor her in a small way. I find myself trying to honor her in other ways as well but all of this is still very new to me. I have never spent a lifetime with an animal before and held them when they passed. We loved her with everything we had. I decided that I can never have another black cat because she was so extraordinarily special to us. But if you ever see me wearing something with cats or a black cat, know that I do so in memory of her. I do it to feel close to her in some small way.

So spending the day in a dress in its crazy cat lady print was was perfect because of Sophie I have become just that.

A Vintage Nerd, Old Hollywood Biographies, Classic Film Books

What is better than reading a few books on Old Hollywood? Joining a reading challenge about it! Out of the Past blog is hosting a Summer Reading Challenge dedicated to classic film.

So much of what influences my style and my blog is my passion for classic film. In film we get to laugh and cry with the people on screen who lived lifetimes ago. And frankly, its magical.

If you are interested in entering this reading challenge it's easy peasy. Just click on Out of the Past's link that I shared, sign up, choose 6 books to read, and then share your review on the link provided on the summer reading challenge page. The books have to be about some aspect of classic film. Once you enter your six reviews you will also be automatically entered into giveaway hosted by Out of the Past blog.

I love learning new things and this challenge is a great motivator to read some books that I have. I can't wait to share my thoughts about them with you.

So join me in this fun reading challenge if you can! These are my six selections and I will be sharing reviews on each of them shortly. Happy reading!

6 Years as a Blogger-Yay!

July 12, 2017
A Vintage Nerd, Retro Dresses, Bernie Dexter Plaid Dress, Vintage Blogger

Six years have come and gone. My youngest son was just a few months old when I decided to embark on my journey as a blogger. I started out as many of you know with Bunny's Victory and then grew into A Vintage Nerd. I am equally proud of them both. One is an extension of the other but it is here on this blog where I have really found my role as a blogger has blossomed the most.

I know I may not be the most successful blogger out there. I may not always be able to sit and write as often as I would like. I may not always have content that appeals to everyone. But I can say with confidence that I love being a blogger. My role as a wife and mother means everything to me but being a blogger has allowed me to continue to be creative and passionate.

Blogging has allowed me to expand myself in ways I would have never considered doing before. It also allows my family to see another side of me. One that isn't just being mommy but also being Daffny. Lucky for me my family has been incredibly supportive of my long hours writing, my endless photos shoots, and my fashion experimentations. They have become my biggest fans.

In six years I have found life long friendships and creative connections. I have become better at my craft and also evolved in my personal style. Being a blogger continuously reminds me of the importance of doing something for oneself and the importance of sharing with others. It also encourages me to continue to learn new things. Whether its a new hairstyle or something about women in WWII, I am always learning something new for my blog.

It is this joy of learning, this joy of creativity, and this joy of sharing that I am celebrating today. Happy 6 Years as a Blogger to me-Yay!
