Vintage Teen: 6 Benefits of Journaling

April 25, 2024

I started journaling at the age of nine back in 1985. I still have most of my journals. That first one sadly perished in a house fire but I still remember feeling the excitement of writing in it and sharing all about my secret crush. It feels so special to be able to look back on your life in such detail because of the gift of journaling.

Here are 6 benefits from journaling:

1. Connect with yourself-create a dialogue with yourself and connect with who you are and who you want to be.

2. Discover  the world around you-writing down the things you experience reconnects you to yourself and the world around you.

3. Boost your memory-it can help you remember your experiences long after you have written them down.

4. Boost emotional intelligence-you are able to work out your feelings about things and gain a deeper understanding to what you are feeling.

5. Reduces stress-writing things down can help you vent out everything you are feeling and going through.

6. Inspires creativity-you can list ideas or flush them out while you are writing.

Vintage Teen: Betty Cornell’s Glamour Guide for Teens & Teen-Age Popularity Guide

April 27, 2023
A Vintage Nerd, Glamour Guide for Teens, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Vintage Teen, Betty Cornell's Teenage Popularity Guide, Vintage Teen Books

Having a teen in your midst can be overwhelming at times. You're trying your best to understand them and communicate with them. But I think being a teen is actually more challenging. The constant awkwardness, the feelings of inadequacy, and the never-ending worries that seem to slip into their heads.

I currently have two teens and one pre-teen. They are each very different and each day is a new adventure into teenager-land. I can attest that not one day is ever dull in the vintage nerd household. So what is a parent to do with their teen? Sometimes the best things you can do is listen, be patient, and provide them with useful advice and information.

Betty Cornell was a teen model in the 1940's and 1950's who at some point was invited to conduct good grooming classes that ultimately lead to a career as an author of advice books. Betty first had Betty Cornell’s Glamour Guide for Teens  published in 1951 then Betty Cornell's Teen-Age Popularity Guide in 1953. In addition to these first two books which were hugely popular with the teen demographic she also published Betty Cornell’s All About Boys (1958) and So You’re Going to be a Teen (1963).

Each guide contains advice on how to eat better, how to tend to your complexion, modeling tricks, good grooming tips, lifestyle etiquette, how to conduct oneself at work, and even how to earn money. A lot of the advice can seen archaic at first glance but there is something charming about Betty's approach to teen life. She aims to make things easier for teens and there is plenty of advice in each these teen books that still can be applied to today's teens.

For example, in chapter eight of Betty Cornell's Teen-Age Popularity Guide (1953) Betty discusses clothes and fashion. One of the aspects of clothes that she touches on first is what colors you choose to wear can have a telling effect on how you look. She states, "To find out which colors become you, start by placing yourself in one of the following categories:
  1. Brunette----fair skinned
  2. Brunette----dark skinned
  3. Blonde----fair skinned
  4. Blonde----dark skinned
  5. Medium brown----fair to dark skin
  6. Redhead----fair to dark skin
Note that your skin color is just as important as our hair color in determining what to wear. Too often, teens tend to overlook their skin color and think of themselves only by their hair color. Brunettes with fair skin should play up the exquisite contrast of light and dark. They can look feminine in pastels, pale pink and blue, in dark shades like navy and deep green; they can look ravishing in bright green and red."

I can attest as a fair skinned brunette myself that navy blue, green, and red look really good on me. If you haven't noticed from my blog posts and my Instagram account, the main colors for my clotheing palette is navy blue, green, and red. Those are the colors that make my skin tone and hair color really pop out. Betty's tips on finding the best colors to wear based on your hair color and skin tone was spot on.

Both of Betty's books still last the test of time. These guides are chock-full of useful tips and tricks to help any teen (or grown up who used to be a teen) be the best version that they can be.

Now that I am a little bit older my mom doesn't pick out my Halloween costumes for me anymore. Instead she asks me what I want to be and I usually tell her that I don't know. There is so much to choose from that it can be a little bit overwhelming.

I love Halloween and I love looking at pictures so I thought I would share with you some everyday vintage Halloween costumes that might help you with your costume. Looking at these old pictures helped me to figure out what I was going to be. I also included a picture of my mom when she was little on Halloween. Let me know which one you think she is and which ones are your favorite. I think I like the last one best which is a vampire girl from the 1960's. Happy Halloween!

A Little Vintage Nerd: My Favorite Vintage Back-to-School Looks

September 12, 2022
A Vintage Nerd, A Little Vintage Nerd, Vintage Back to School Outfits, School Girl Fashion, Vintage Fashion Inspiration, Vintage Teen, Vintage Teen Fashion
I started high school a few days ago and realized that what I wear is going to be just as important as my schoolwork. I think its really important to feel good with what you are wearing when you are having a busy day like I have been at school. I don't have one style that I wear all the time because I like to mix up my fashion. Sometimes I am a jeans and t-shirt girl, sometimes I am wearing a retro style, and sometimes I am head-to-toe in pastel colors. Fashion can be so much fun to play with, don't you think?

I love all the vintage and retro reproductions my mother has in her closet. I asked her to keep everything she has so I can try them on later. When I was getting my outfit ready for my first day of school I started to think about what teens liked to wear for their back-to-school style years ago. I found a few pictures for inspiration of back-to-school styles that I would definitely wear.

I really like the cute sweaters and the long, flowing skirts in the 1950's, the big collars and mini skirts in the 1960's, the bell bottom jeans and their cute tops in the 1970's, and the pastel jumpers in the 1980's. The reasons I like these specific outfits is because I think these outfits look really comfortable to wear to school. I would wear these vintage outfits even if it wasn't for school. My personal favorites are the 1970's and 1980's outfits because it's simple but cute.  I also think it would be easy to wear if I wanted to go somewhere to hang out with my friends.

Here are my favorite back-to-school vintage looks from the 1950's-1980's:

A Little Vintage Nerd: Reflections on Classic Teen Movies

August 25, 2022
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, A Little Vintage Nerd, Vintage Teen, Old Teen Movies, Classic Teen Movies

I love to watch old movies with my family. The first time my mother showed me a classic movie was when I was seven years old. She took me to the Film Forum in Manhattan to see To Sir, with Love (1967) on the big screen. Since then I have watched a lot of old movies.

For my first post I wanted to share my reflections of classic teen movies. I wanted to see what teens were like before and I think that I picked some good movies.  I also wanted to know if there were some  things that I could learn from watching these classic teen movies. Have you seen these movies? What are your favorite teen movies?

Here are some classic teen movies and my reflections after I watched them:

Rebel without a Cause (1955)

A Vintage Nerd, Classic Movie Blog, A Little Vintage Nerd, Vintage Teen, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Teen Movies Reviewed, Rebel without a Cause

Rebel with a Cause (1955) is the kind of teen movie that shows that kids can be misunderstood especially if they do not get enough guidance or attention from their parents. This movie tells the story of three different teens who have their own individual issues. The one thing they all seem to have in common is that their parents don't seem to understand them or acknowledge their struggles. Somehow they all come together and eventually hangout and bond. Tragedy strikes when one of them dies and leaves the other two devastated since they were like a family to each other.

This movie shows on how the kids feel misunderstood by their parents and adults. It also shows how even though they feel disconnected from their own families, they were able to find a family with each other. This movie can remind teens today that it is normal to feel lonely, normal to not feel like you fit in with your family, or to be frustrated by your parents not understanding you. It reminded me how important it is to share how to feel to a trusting adult and how grateful I am that I can talk to my parents when I am feeling wonky inside.

Splendor in the Grass (1961)

A Vintage Nerd, Classic Movie Blog, A Little Vintage Nerd, Vintage Teen, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Teen Movies Reviewed, Splendor in the Grass

Splendor in the Grass (1961) is about two deeply in love teenagers and how like and other people get in the way of their relationship. It wasn't just another lover who got in the way of their love, but it was their parent's expectations and their unfulfilled dreams that they pushed on their children (Deanie and Bud). As more and more pressure weighs on their love for one another, Deanie eventually starts to break down. Out of desperation her parents put her in a mental hospital. It ends up being the best place for Deanie and it helped her health. When she finally gets out she is healthier and has found someone she can settle with. Deanie feels like she has to face her past and see Bud only to find that he also settles with someone else. They split ways and go back with their lives far away from each other even though they both know that they still feel the love that they had before everything came crashing down. It was a very bittersweet ending.

This movie shows that without the help of adults and good advice things can become a confused mess. The movie also shows teen depression, both of Deanie and Bud but they show it in different ways. They both try to get some help but nobody wants to listen to them so it gets bottled up inside. Deanie's character can show teens today that it is okay to get help when you need it. For example, when Deanie is in the mental hospital, she says to her mother when she visits that she wasn't ashamed of being in the hospital. Bud finds his peace with a simple life and a family away from everything he grew up with. It taught me that sometimes life doesn't always go the way you plan it and sometimes you have to make the best of it.

Over the Edge (1979)

A Vintage Nerd, Classic Movie Blog, A Little Vintage Nerd, Vintage Teen, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Over the Edge, Teen Movies Reviewed

Over The Edge (1979) is about young teens living in the suburbs at a new town development. Even though the town is great, the teens are beyond bored because they only have one place to really hang out in. The clashing between the adults, the laws, and the children gets worse and worse especially after Richie White (Matt Dillion) is killed by Sgt. Doberman. When that happens the rest of the teen acted on revenge against all of the adults in town who are in the school for a meeting. They lock up the building, trash the school, and burn cars as an act of rebellion. Carl (Michael Kramer) whose story we follow through the movie ends up realizing that none of those acts of revenge and rebellion will make a difference. He eventually gives himself in end and leaves with a bunch of the other teens who destroyed the town on a bus to a juvenile detention center.

This movie shows that there can be problems even in the nicest, newest towns. It also showed that when teens are bored or angry that they can rebel in destructive ways.  I also think this movie shows the differences between teens and adults and how their opinions that can clash together possibly cause chaos. I was reminded that it is important not to stay bored and always do things to keep busy and creative. That teen rebellion isn't always the best way to act out and violence never solves anything.

Heathers (1988)

A Vintage Nerd, Classic Movie Blog, A Little Vintage Nerd, Vintage Teen, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Heathers

Heathers (1989) is a popular and classic teen movie with some dark twists but happens to have a better ending then in most teen movies today. It stars Winona Ryder as Veronica Sawyer, Christian Slater as Jason "J.D." Dean, and Shannen Doherty as Heather Duke. The movie starts with Veronica having a normal teenage life but with terrible best friends. For a teen movie, I expected the cheesy bullying and having a 'happy ending' with a teen jock so to my happy surprise this movie revealed a lot of fun, dark humor with unexpected twists. The movie has also some great vintage like clothing and a great cast as well.

To me, I think this movie shows all the terrible things that can happen in a teenager's life. For example, peer pressure, cliques, suicide, date rape, eating disorders, and underage drinking to name a few. This movie also shows how easily someone as smart as Veronica can get involved with a guy who has shady behavior and almost lose herself. I think teens today could learn a lot from this movie. They can learn not to follow others but to be a leader of their own life, to build their confidence, and to be aware of intentions that others might have that could affect their lives.
