Be Inspired: Sunshine Award Questionnaire

April 10, 2024
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Old Hollywood Blog, Classic Movie Reviews, Old Movie Blog, Realweegiemidget’s Reviews, Sunshine Blogger Award
The nicest thing happened a few months ago. Gill from Realweegiemidget’s Reviews blog nominated me for a Sunshine Blogger Award. It's been ages since I have been gifted one of these. They were really popular when I first started blogging back in 2011. It was really cool to be nominated and thought of by such a wonderful blogger like Gill from Realweegiemidget’s Reviews.

Now technically I will not be receiving the award because I cannot nominate 11 bloggers. Frankly the world of blogging especially for us vintage bloggers has changed dramatically over the years. Many have left and stopped blogging. Honestly I just don't know 11 consistent bloggers well enough to nominate them. So although I won't fully receive this award, I still wanted to answer the questions that Gill asked because they were just too much fun to pass up.

I also wanted a chance to share a little more about me. Hope you enjoy reading and check out Realweegiemidget’s Reviews blog when you can.

Who would be your dream interview subject and why?

My dream interview would have been a gaggle of Old Hollywood stars including Joan Crawford, Jimmy Stewart, Sidney Poitier, Debbie Reynolds, Bette Davis, and Ricardo Montalbán,

What’s your favorite blogathon that you have either run or taken part in?

All the ones I have participated in the past year.

You have the choice of a film festival to attend in 2024 in an all-expenses paid trip, which do you choose…?

I only know of one. The TCM Classic Film Festival. It began in April 2010 but by then I was pregnant with my third child and my two eldest where toddlers themselves. I knew I wouldn't be able to go and I remember feeling crushed. I really wanted to meet Robert Osborne as I admire him greatly. So going to this festival would be a long awaited dream come true for me.

What film-inspired present would you buy for me if you had 50 dollars (or your own currency) to spend…?

I would get you a few dvds and books to enjoy because they are the gifts that keep on giving.

Imagine that you are moving house, which actor or actress would you choose as your next door neighbor?

I think I would want neighbors who would be friendly and fun. I think it would be Debbie Reynolds and Robert Osborne. Debbie would never be boring and Robert (who did technically acted a little in the 1960's) would be great to do a book club with or watch movies with all the time.

What’s your favorite film franchise?

Of modern films I will say the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises.

Which year is your favorite in film, and support your answer with your top 3 movies from this time…

I cannot choose a year in classic films because it's just too much too sift through. I can give one favorite year of films from the 1980's because its the main decade of my childhood. These films are super nostalgic for me. The year is 1985 and some of the top favorites of that year were; The Last Dragon, The Goonies, Back to the Future, Explorers, Fright Night, Silver Bullet, Young Sherlock Holmes, Legend, Ladyhawke, and Enemy Mine. It was a great year for movies.

Recommend a film to me that you think would easily fit in my blog.

La Prima Notte Di Quiete (1972) starring the great Alain Delon. I would also highly recommend I Knew Her Well (1965). It's beautiful and deeply haunting.

Without saying who the murderer is, which Agatha Christie inspired movie would you change the murderer in…

I would have to choose The Mirror Crack'd (1980)

What's your favorite films related biopic?

I cannot share one so I will share a slew that I have enjoyed through the years. Some of these are; Brian's Song (1971), The Elephant Man (1980), Amadeus (1984), Empire of the Sun (1987), Chaplin (1992), Girl, Interrupted (1999), Boys Don't Cry (1999), Almost Famous (2000), Remember the Titans (2000), Frida (2002), The Pianist (2002), Hotel Rwanda (2004), Philomena (2013) Hacksaw Ridge (2016), Hidden Figures (2016), Elvis (2022).

Who was the first celebrity who responded to you on social media and who was the last…?

None. The celebs I appreciate are all much older and don't know how to use use social media very well. Oh, Ethan Peck (Gregory Peck's grandson) did like a comment I left for him on his IG page-does that count?

A Vintage Nerd Amazon Storefront

I'm taking a few steps as a blogger to not only enhance my blog and the work I have been doing for over ten years but also to build on the business side of my blog. I recently opened an Amazon Storefront on Amazon. There I have categories where you can shop from. Each category is carefully curated, true to my brand, and caters to all things that I love.

The classic films and old Hollywood books I added to my storefront are a result of years of watching, reading, discovering, and endless trips down the rabbit hole of researching. In those two categories alone in my shop you can find endless titles of films and books-many which are hard to find or you may have never heard of before.

I am adding to my shop frequently but know that what I add I have either worn, seen, read, or used before myself. I will never recommend a product that isn't good quality. Each time someone from my storefont shops, I will receive a small commission once the item is shipped.

I would love for you to stop by my new Amazon Storefront. I love what I do as a blogger here on A Vintage Nerd and hope that this new endeavor will make the grade.

10 Years of A Vintage Nerd Blog

I remember clearly the night I created A Vintage Nerd blog. My first blog Bunny's Victory was having major problems and I could no longer log into my account. I remember crying and panicking and realizing that things couldn't end that way. I had to ask myself whether or not I was going to stop blogging or continue ahead. It didn't take me long to realize that I really loved what I was doing and I didn't want to stop. Then suddenly the name A Vintage Nerd popped into my head and I started it that very night.

10 years have now passed since I started and I have really loved every minute of it. Whether a few people see my posts or a lot of people see my posts-it doesn't matter. I am deeply passionate about writing, sharing, learning, teaching, and exploring. And my blog has allowed me to do the things I love to do and connect with others. They say when you are doing something you love that it never feels like work. It is still work-long hours researching, writing, editing, taking photos, reading books and watching films to review, etc but I have relished in every aspect of blogging.

I wanted to have a big celebration to mark my 10 years as a vintage nerd on my blog but I decided to just enjoy the moment quietly. I am grateful to all those who stop by and read my posts. And I am grateful that I get to work on something that I truly love doing. Happy 10 years to A Vintage Nerd blog!

Here are some of my favorite posts from the past 10 years:

7 Reasons Why You Should Still Go To Movie Theaters

October 24, 2023
A Vintage Nerd, Going to the movies, Classic Movie Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Jean Overalls and Beret

One of the things I enjoy doing the most is taking my family to see a movie in the movie theater. The experience of getting out of the house, the excitement of what we are about to see, and the treat of seeing a movie on a big screen are what I love the most.

We mainly support our local movie theater which is privately owned and also a historic landmark but we also indulge in other types of movie theater experiences such as; IMAX, Fathom Events, theaters that serve meals, and small theaters in the city.

Here are 7 reasons why you should still go to movie theaters:

  1. Get out of the comfort of your home and watch a movie in the comfort of your favorite movie theater.
  2. See a film on the big screen the way it was meant to be seen.
  3. Hang out with your loved ones to watch something fun.
  4. Watching a film on the big screen will feel like an immersive experience.
  5. Seeing a movie in the theater allows you to view it from a different perspective.
  6. Your kids won't be able to talk, get on electronics, or leave-they will learn to be still, pay attention, and enjoy what they are watching.
  7. Opportunities to watch films from years ago instead of just on your t.v. at home will be a magical and unique experience.

Be Inspired: Cannot Stop The Change

April 24, 2023

They say spring is the season of change. The grass gets greener, the weather gets warmer, the flowers bloom, and we shed our coats for lighter outerwear like cardigans and jackets. This spring I've been reflecting even more than ever. I'm a reflective person by nature. Journaling used to be my outlet for many years until I moved into the blogging format. Although my blog is not a lifestyle one I do like to share bits and pieces of inspiration when I can.

One of the things about life that you can count on is that it will always change. Nothing ever stays the same. Reflecting has been a way for me to work through the changes and figure them out as they are happening. But sometimes so much change can come at you all at once that it is near to impossible to figure any of it out. Understanding it all becomes like trying to solve a large puzzle.  I think the last two times I faces so many changes in my life was probably my teen/young adult years which I think everyone goes through and when I became a mother of three which happened in the span of four years during my early thirties.

Now that I am in my late 40's and just a few steps away from entering my 50's I have been wondering a lot about things I haven't wondered about in a long time. Like who am I after all this life has been lived, can I still dream big and make them come true, how do I fit into this world, and what kind of woman will I be as my children get older. Not only do I have philosophical questions swimming around in my noggin but I have a body that is undergoing changes both because of my disability and just being a woman.

And as all this hits me all the time, all at once-every single day the only thing I know for sure is that I cannot stop the change. I'm being pushed forward into the next day even though I am still trying to figure out all the other days that already passed by. I have no choice but to sit still with myself as much as I can and let time ease the pain, stress, worry, and exhaustion that has come from all this change.

I'm being reminded again at this phase of my life that I cannot stop any of this from happening so I should just try to be patient and see where it will lead me. This isn't my usual approach to life. My usual approach to is to ask questions, reflect, and discern my answers for myself. But sometimes when life is hitting you with all sorts of things the best thing you can do for yourself is to be still, be patient, and be open to the world around you because I do believe all the answers we are searching for are already inside of us. We just need to remind ourselves sometimes to be patient.

Be Inspired: So This Is 47

January 24, 2023
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Retro Lifestyle Blog, Red Beret, Vintage Nerd, Style Over 40, Vintage Inspired Fashion

So this is 47. This new year brings me a lot of the same things and hope for some things to evolve. I'm still a mom, still struggling with my disability, and still blogging. The things that I hope to evolve will or won't with time. They say another year older is another year wiser. My hopes for myself is that I become wise enough to ignore any doubts I may have within myself and believe more in my abilities.

There are so many blessings that come with age. One of them is the gift of time. With time you can work on your goals, change what you need to change, and learn better skills to help you become more of the person you want to be. So here's to 47.
